AUTHOR: Jordan L. Hawk
NARRATOR: Brad Langer
PUBLISHER: Widdershins Press
LENGTH: 3 hours, 44 minutes
RELEASE DATE: June 10, 2015
BLURB:
Caleb has spent the last six months adjusting to life possessed by the vampire spirit Gray. Unfortunately, after the events of Fort Sumter, the other agents of SPECTR view him more as a ticking time bomb than a co-worker.
The one bright spot is Caleb and Gray’s boyfriend, federal exorcist John Starkweather. But John has problems of his own. A supernatural killer is on the loose in Charleston, stealing the hearts of its victims to extend its own unnatural life.
With the help of a rookie agent, John, Caleb, and Gray must find the killer before it strikes again…or before they become the demon’s next victims.
REVIEW:
This series starts out about six months after the first ended. I would recommend starting from the beginning to really understand what’s going on and all the nuances of this series.
When we catch up with our guys, John, Caleb and Gray are working for SPECTR. But it’s an uneasy partnership (from the agency’s side). Many of them are afraid of Gray and fearing him getting out of control, and the open hostility is wearing the trio down. Added to it is their new boss really doesn’t like John and goes out of his way to make life difficult. The trio and their new partner, rookie agent Zahira are tasked with stopping a demon from its killing spree, but things get a bit dicey seeing as said demon could fly.
Mocker of Ravens was another good addition. I can’t get enough of these characters. I loved how our trio’s relationship felt more real than it had (to me) before. Yes they are solid, but they also have issues that they need to work through. There have been many changes for all of them and they need to learn to accept those changes and figure out a way to live with them long term – and not only surviving in the moment.
Brad Langer once again did a stellar performance and sucked the listener into the story from the start. We lived in the story beginning to end. We felt the thunder and storms, the love between the men. We saw the rubber duckies flying in battle and felt the intensity of the hunts. I also loved Gray’s jealousy when John was hit on – it was funny – not that he thought so, but for the listener it was fun to watch this five thousand year old drakul be jealous – of a woman no less. Genders and pronouns is just mortal nonsense to this drakul and the concept of what gay means is not something he’s grasped yet.
I’m looking forward to see what else this series will bring.
