Who would believe that pretending to be your next door neighbor’s boyfriend for a simple family dinner would change so many lives forever? As two witches from two very different families learn how their destinies are intertwined, they realize they may be the only hope for their kind to survive what’s coming for them all.
Atherton Blackwood
Once upon a time, I was the heir to my family’s seat on the High Council of Witches. After one horrific night, the Council was no more and all the families went into hiding. The likelihood I would ever find my mo shíorghrá, my soul mate, was gone. But by fate or luck, I’ve finally found my other half. Tobias Wyvern was destined to be mine, but we’re discovering that’s not all destiny has in store for us. I need to find out if our future will be our own, or if it will be determined by a prophecy that was written before either of us were born. I’ll do whatever I have to do, go wherever I have to go to find a way for us to be together. Even if it means going home.
Tobias Wyvern
I invited my next door neighbor, Arthur, to a family dinner to get them off my back, but what I’m finding out is that my whole life has been a lie. I was always told we were the only witches left in the world, but that’s because my family was too frightened to tell me the truth. They signed a contract when I was a child, but had no intention of following through. The Wyverns and the Blackwoods would never be united if they could prevent it. Things happened and they were able to disappear, but now Atherton Blackwood is here to claim me, and I’m ready to be claimed. However, claiming me now has consequences far beyond a vow to each other. By coming together, we’ll set into motion a destiny neither one of us could ever have predicted.
REVIEW:
This is a good start to the series and with the way it ended, I’m definitely intrigued to see what happens next. The squirrel alone made it funny. You’ll just have to read to find out. But it’s a whole bunch of things wrapped into one. It’s a murder mystery, a mystery alone, a paranormal book loaded with different things, evil people you want to smack (and they get what’s coming to them *evil laugh*), and it’s a romantic story as well. I love the characters in this one. And the added ones at the end, just make things better going forward.
Atherton hated the thought that he was going to have to leave what was left of his family. He loved grandparents and loved the land they lived on, but it was time for him to move forward in his life. His grandparents gave them all they could in order to survive and be able to hide in plain sight. And hopefully stay under the radar until needed. He moved around until he found a place where he felt like he needed to be and next door to a neighbor that called to him on every level. But Tobias wasn’t aware of what Atherton was. And that stumped Atherton. So when he was invited by Tobias for the gathering at Samhain, he agreed, knowing it was time to finally reveal his secrets and to set things on the course that they are meant to be. One way or another.
Man, if I was Tobias, I would have tried somewhere to find an edge of the world and jumped off. Good grief the punks he had to put up with would have sent me to the nut house. No wonder he ran and stayed away from that mess. And I know Atherton was trying to be good for Tobias when he met that mess, but yeah, if I was him, I would have went with my first instinct and punched the snot out of them. Shew. But the good news is that they had each other. And what Tobias thought of as dreams, were actually realities of their childhoods. And it’s quite interesting. I love with all that Tobias had to go through, that he now had someone who was willing and loved to stand up for him now. Atherton didn’t put up with the crap that Tobias did and he would let NO one, talk bad or down to him anymore. I loved the chemistry between the two of them too. Well, sex is one of those things that I can take or leave in a book, I have to admit, there is one hot af scene in this book that may have you taking a cold shower yourself. Whoo.
Overall, it’s really a good story. The dynamics between Toby and Ath are wonderful. It’s more than just ‘fate’ to them. They truly do care for each other and truly want to fix the things that are wrong. It doesn’t mean they aren’t scared or that it leaves them a bit leery, but in order to do the right thing, they know they have to do it. And with the new goofballs that have just shown up on the scene, it’s about to get very interesting indeed.
