Phew! Now, that that’s out of the way, Hi. I’m Mr. No, your friendly communications agent for The Assassins’ Guild AKA T.A.G.
I’ve been authorized by the head honcho himself, Mr. H, to release approved records from the agent files.
Agent Code Name Mr. W was recovering from a near death debacle by way of an easy assignment in a small mountain town. Red flags sprang up immediately around the seemingly innocent English professor. Determined to get to the bottom of the mystery Jacob Peters presented, Mr. W made plans to do what he did best, watch , wait , and then capture and interrogate.
But even the best laid plans can go awry…
Find out what brought Mr. W to his knees in this first release from the archives of The Assassins’ Guild.
REVIEW: First, I was glad I picked this book before I saw the cover, because I probably wouldn’t have done so otherwise. Regardless, the blurb intrigued me and I was looking forward to another audio, so I snapped this one up. I wasn’t too sure about it at first – it starts off with a totally different vibe than I was expecting. It was a bit more goofy and lighthearted than the blurb suggests, but I really enjoyed the narrator’s voice and decided to go with it.
We meet Yoshi, a young assassin who is doing surveillance on his next mark. But, something feels off, and he is determined to find out what it is before he goes through with the job. As he takes his time stalking said mark, his attraction grows. It seems Yoshi has a submissive side that is dying to be satisfied. That is made more apparent when he makes contact, and while that sends Yoshi scurrying, it also puts his kidnapping plan into full motion.
This is told in two parts – the first from Yoshi’s perspective, the second from Jake’s (his mark). It isn’t until we get to part 2 that the story really starts to come together, as the first spends most of its time in Yoshi’s head.
Yoshi is the adopted son of the head of the Assassin’s Guild. He has basically been trained from a toddler to become an agent of the Guild. He, along with his bff and fellow adopted Guild brother, are now expert assassins. Jake is another member of the guild and bff to Yoshi’s father. There is quite a tale woven about these guys and their relationships, the hows and whys, etc. that make up the fabric of this story and what I ended up finding most interesting.
I think this is a case where the book being an audio may have taken something away from the overall story, but Gomez Pugh does a fabulous job of sucking you in with the character portrayals, giving each a distinctive voice. He has a great voice that was clear and easy to listen to. I’m looking forward to the next installment and hope he is on board for the narration. Either way, I’ll not hesitate to grab another of his creations.
