BLURB:
When the police call the slaughter of his mother and brother a home invasion gone bad, Mika doesn’t believe it. Because he has no way to prove otherwise, he closes down, refusing to talk about what happened.
That is until Buck, a bouncer at a local bar Mika visits, convinces Mika to open up to him. When he does, Buck not only learns about the murder, but also that Mika grew up living off the grid until his father died, two years previously, at which point his family moved to the city.
They begin to bond as they try to figure out the reason behind the murders, which may revolve around the family property in the mountains. All they have to do is prove it, without being killed in the process. Only if they can will they take a chance and move their growing friendship on to something more.
REVIEW:
This was a pretty good little mystery. I enjoyed it. I was racking my brain along with the MCs, trying to figure out who and why. I got it just a bit before they did lol. I swear I’m getting slow in my old age on figuring things out. Or maybe writing is just that good 😉 . Either way, it was a good mystery with a slow burn between the MCs.
Mika is devastated, again, at finding what’s left of his family brutally murdered. It’s a sight he will never forget. And the more he thinks about it, the worse he feels. Had he not gone on that date and stayed the night, maybe he could have saved them, or at least not feel guilty for being the only one alive. But what Mika can’t figure out is why. The police think it was a burglary gone bad, but Mika knows they didn’t have anything worth stealing, so it had to be something else. He meets Buck at a bar, where he tries to drown his sorrows but can’t and they strike up a friendship, because if anything Buck knew from looking at him, Mika needed a friend. But as things come out, they are trying to figure out what happened and why, and before they get killed themselves.
If you want just a short, good murder mystery, this is it. It’s a slow burn affection between the characters. It focuses more on what’s going on and the relationship they want, but want to make sure they stay friends no matter what. But with their focus on what’s going on and why, things kind of take a backburner anyway. Not that they don’t think about it. Or a little more. But the mystery is what makes it. I feel for Mika in this so bad, because as he’s looking at the clues, he’s putting pieces together that are hurting him even more. And how this all started to begin with. And the only family he has left, is an uncle who is….well, butthead is a nice word for it. It’s heartbreaking, though, because in the end, someone chose greed over friendship and it cost people their lives. And over something unnecessary. It’s sad.
But it made for a good story. It’s not a long one. So if you just want a quick read to get that murder mystery feel in, this is definitely a good one. I enjoyed it. I’m really liking Edward’s mysteries that I’ve read. If you haven’t read them, you should really give them a try. Good stuff.
