Prince Owin
Being a fierce predator—not at all adorable, despite my graceful stature—the last thing I needed was a bodyguard. Especially a wolf shifter, whose presence alone was an insult to my princely principles. As Prince of the Ocelot Shifters, I prided myself on my infallible feline instincts, uncompromisable dignity, and flawless fashion sense. If having a canine follow me around at all times wasn’t bad enough, I now faced the most important moment of my entire life. The time had come to prove I was worthy of my crown. If only I could find a way to get rid of the pesky bodyguard.

When the King of All Shifters asked me to guard Prince Owin, I admit I had no idea what to expect. Cat shifters tend to be a little intense, not to mention kinda cranky. Owin was no exception, though he seemed crankier than most. Being his bodyguard was proving to be one of the greatest challenges of my life—but not nearly as great as convincing him there was something special between us. When Owin is faced with a perilous quest to prove his worth, I was determined to keep him safe, even if the same couldn’t be said of my heart.
Never in all my life had I known anyone more stubborn than the man in my arms. Despite how tired I’d been last night, I stayed awake in the hopes he’d come around. I’d curled up on myself and pretended to be asleep, knowing he’d rather freeze his tail off than come anywhere near me while I was awake. After what seemed a lifetime, he’d silently padded over, made sure I was asleep, then oh-so-carefully climbed up and made himself cozy. I hadn’t been able to stop from opening one eye when I heard the distinct soft chainsaw-like purr. The joy that spread through me was ridiculous. I’d made him purr. The guy who would sooner claw my nose off than show any form of vulnerability around me.
In the months I’d been at his side, he’d never shown anything but frustration and annoyance toward me. He was convinced he didn’t need anyone. My very presence insulted his princely sensibilities, which meant getting a rise out of him became my favorite hobby. Watching him lose his shit was so much fun.
Sometime during the night, we both shifted back into our human forms, and I woke up to an armful of reluctant prince. His soft snores made me smile, as did the jumbled mess of his hair. He had his arms tight around me, as if he were afraid I’d leave without him. His weight on me was heavenly, and when I inhaled his scent, I couldn’t help the shiver that went through me. How could I be attracted to someone so… complicated? With a hum, he snuggled closer. He’d lose his mind when he woke up and found himself on me, but I was going to enjoy every second I could of him all soft and sleepy.
Light filtered into the cave, but the morning air had a chill to it. I didn’t know what realm we were in. That seemed the only downside to the orbs. They appeared to take us where we needed to be but didn’t tell us where that was. Enchanted forests were a dime a dozen. Every realm had one, or several dozen. Contents may vary. I snickered, and Owin let out a soft moan. Damn it, I hadn’t meant to wake him. He lifted his head and looked around sleepily before his gaze landed on me. Slowly his eyes widened.
“Um, hello,” he said quietly. Taking a risk, I ran my fingers through his hair and smiled at him.
“Hello.”
“I’m lying on you.”
“You are,” I replied softly, afraid of spooking him.
“I… slept on you.”
“You did.”
