Moose biologist Greer Jefferson checks into the Black Mountain Inn in hopes of working on his thesis and getting up close and personal with his target subjects. What he finds instead is a mountain of a man with a bad attitude and lips to die for.
When the blizzard of the century strikes, and the hotel is evacuated, a certain moose aficionado is left behind with Hyde. Will sparks fly between them or will Greer be left out in the cold?
REVIEW:
This was such a good story but a hard one as well. I don’t want to give too much away in the story, BUT I do want to warn people, it does deal with a Marine who went through combat and lost friends and had to save some with severe injuries while dealing with his own. He has severe PTSD and survivor’s guilt. If that is an issue, please be careful. His past is not a pretty one.
The thing about Hyde, is he was living up to part of his name. Just a different spelling. After all that went down overseas, he was hiding away in the mountains, taking a maintenance job to try to get away from the overwhelming feelings of failure to his men and his PTSD. The problem was some days it worked because he was so busy, he didn’t have too much time to think. But for the most part, it was going away. And he wasn’t getting better. When he sees a beautiful man in a red parka, he’s in instant lust. But he knows he’s no good for Greer and automatically starts pushing him away, by being hateful and rude. But Greer tries to deal, until Hyde goes too far. But when a blizzard leaves them stuck together, they have no choice but to be in close quarters and end up finding things out about each other. Hyde expects Greer to run away from him after he hears Hyde’s story, but instead he gives Hyde a different perspective about his situation and maybe a moment to breathe. But once the snow starts clearing away, real life invades again and Hyde is back to his grumpy self. And again, goes to far. Now he has to figure out how to apologize and make it right or lose Greer forever.
Such a hard story to read. It really is. Anytime you deal with PTSD from military, it’s not usually an easy battle and ends up with a lot of people in pain. In one way or another. Hyde really doesn’t mean to lash out and hurt people, but he’s in so much pain of his own, he’s terrified to let people too close to him. But somehow Greer got under his skin anyway. And that terrified Greer even worse. He didn’t know how to deal with feelings and emotion. He was a closed off person. A one and done kind of man. But Greer made him want to be better. Want to strive to have a better life. No matter what it took to do so. But yet, I understood Greer’s point of view too. With his own bad past, thanks to his ex, one can only stand to be pushed away and hurt by words so much before too much is too much. So, it’s hard for both of them. And almost seems like an impossible situation.
The one thing both had to learn to do, was communicate. Period. Whether it was to warn the other they need space or something, they had to learn to communicate and listen. And communicate correctly. Not harshly or hurtful. But honestly. It’s not an easy thing to do with a lot of people. It makes them vulnerable. And no one who’s been in battle, especially, likes to be vulnerable. But if you truly want to change, you have to take the steps necessary to make it better for yourself so you can be better for others.
