A battle is coming…
…and the immortal knights aren’t ready.
Will an orphan be the key?
For fifteen hundred years Lucan has waged war with the greatest enemy the world has ever known
…and fought the ancient curse that means loving someone with all his heart and soul might be the reason they die.
Tom wasn’t supposed to be born… twice.
How, as a young child, had he even heard the monsters at all?
How, as an adult, is he caught up in a deadly battle to fight evil, but cannot get one stubborn man to even acknowledge he exists?
Time is running out, not just to unravel the secrets of Tom’s destiny, but for Tom to show Lucan that loving someone with all that they have doesn’t mean breaking their heart.
Or does it?

“Tom collapsed around thirty minutes ago. Mel says it was likely the noise from the Ursus that caused him to black out.”
Lucan jerked forward and ignored the stab to his side. “Is he—”
“He’s awake, breathing fine, and in no pain.” Lance glanced over at Lucan. “I don’t like this.”
Lucan bit his lip on a sarcastic retort, but he knew what Lance meant. If Tom could hear them at the house, then something had changed. And did that mean the protection spell didn’t work either?
“But there’s nothing at the house, so it’s still safe.” Lance unerringly pinned down Lucan’s worry.
Lucan didn’t bother telling Lance to hurry. The car seemed to have grown wings almost. Kay roared in right behind them on Lucan’s bike.
He was out of it and running for the door practically before Lance had screeched to a halt. Mel met them at the door. “We’re pretty sure it coincides with the Ursus appearing.”
Lucan nodded and headed for the stairs. Mel stopped him with a hand on his arm. “Tom had just gone to bed. The last we heard you were deliberately delaying coming back even when the others weren’t. He still thinks that’s true, and he thinks that was because you’re avoiding him.”
Lance stepped through the door, and Mel rushed into his outstretched arms. Lucan headed for the stairs and hurried to his own room without considering Tom may be somewhere else. He opened the door, and Ali looked up with a finger to her lips. She rose from the bed and pushed him back out of the door into the hallway. “He doesn’t seem to have any other effects except it pretty much wiped him out.”
Lucan nodded and took a step to go inside, but for the second time, someone stopped him. It took all Lucan’s strength not to bodily move Ali out of the way.
“He’s fragile,” she murmured. “Hurt him again and I’ll kill you myself.” With that she smiled serenely and walked away.
Lucan put his hand out to push the door open, then hesitated. What did that mean? He shook his head and walked in. Tom opened his eyes, and worry widened them as he took in Lucan. “What happened?”
Lucan looked down at himself. Ever since Lance had gotten the phone call in the car, he had barely thought about the fight with the Ursus. The smell and the sticky dried blood disgusted him. Tom reached out.
“I’m—” He glanced down helplessly, but Tom shook his head.
“Either you get yourself over here, or I’ll have to get out of bed.”
Lucan’s eyes stung. He must have dirt in them. He stepped forward and clasped Tom’s hand. “I didn’t deliberately not come home straightaway.” He unbuckled his shoulder harness and for once, uncaring, let his sword drop to the floor.
Tom searched Lucan’s face as if looking for honesty. “Are you all right?”
Lucan took a step back and regretfully let go of Tom’s fingers. “Give me five minutes.”
He took the fastest shower on record, and that included all the times he’d just dived into a lake or lifted a hosepipe up to sluice the dirt off him. He shrugged on the first clean T-shirt his fingers closed on and some shorts from the pile of clean laundry that never actually made it anywhere except the pile and his body. He let himself out of the bathroom and paused, drinking Tom in.
He’d turned on his side slightly toward the bathroom door as if he wanted to watch for Lucan coming out, but from his closed eyes, slow breathing, and slightly parted lips, it didn’t look like Tom had managed to stay awake.
Which was okay because the thought of Lucan being able to gather him up and hold him while he slept safely spoke to Lucan on such a deep level, he trembled in its intensity. Carefully Lucan pulled back the covers from the other side of the bed and crawled in. Tom moved before he was even settled. Lucan wasn’t sure he was even awake, but like some heat-seeking missile, Tom rolled over and snuggled into Lucan’s chest. It was the easiest thing in the world to lie on his back and pull Tom as close as he could get him. Tom exhaled slowly but didn’t wake, and much as Lucan would have loved to see what his gorgeous lips tasted like, he contented himself with holding him close.
And vowing to keep him there.
