REVIEW:
Steve is CIA and the cameraman for the counterterrorist joint task force. He gathers intel that is later analyzed. Kyle is a motocross star and the cousin of Warren, Steve’s unit chief and friend. When Kyle and Steve meet, immediately sparks fly and the two become inseparable. When Kyle gets mistaken for his cousin, Warren, and is kidnapped by terrorists, military forces come together to rescue him.
The story is told in the third person from the viewpoints of Steve and Kyle. The opening paragraphs introduce the members of Steve’s unit and their respective functions within the team. So much in a short space was a little overwhelming, but as the story progressed, their characters became clearer. The scene-setting is well done, with nothing over or underdone. I got a taste of the motocross circuit as well as the trials of a military unit.
The chemistry between Kyle and Steve is unmistakable, and a hefty portion of the novel is dedicated to them getting to know each other personally and biblically. Given their respective dangerous jobs, who can blame them. They lived dangerously and played even harder. I enjoy reading a good sex scene, but being a reviewer means that I read so many of them, I look for that something extra elsewhere.
As the novel is billed as a Special Forces story, I was looking forward to the military side of things, and I got it when Kyle was kidnapped. I loved this section of the arc. It was gritty, emotional, efficient and adrenaline-fueled. When Delta Force entered the mix, I swooned. Kyle shows his metal when he realized the kind of danger his cousin lived with on a daily basis and was determined not to let his cousin down. Warren was an emotional wreck, and Steve was badass, keeping his nerve while falling apart inside. Not that I wanted to eke out Kyle’s anguish, but damn I could have read the military maneuvers side all day and into the night. Sure, sex scenes are good, but for me, military men in action trump them.
The drama, coupled with the blossoming love between Kyle and Steve, have them re-thinking their priorities and trying to find ways their romance could work.
Rescuing Kyle is a combination of military and civilian life and how the two can sometimes clash. But given a strong enough love, two men in love can make it work. It contains lust, love, anguish, drama, emotional trials and some gorgeous men who will do anything for family.
