Authors know that their muse is a fickle creature. Best-selling spy novelist Steven Ramsey has been in a hate-hate relationship with his inspiration for months. When Steven’s publisher lays a legal ultimatum upon him, with a rapidly approaching deadline, he knows he must do something to kick-start his creativity or face the unemployment line. His daughter comes up with a possible answer: a summer camp for the creative soul. With nothing to lose, Steven packs up his laptop, phonograph, and beloved record albums and heads from Greenwich Village to the Catskill Mountains.
There, among a horde of college students attending for extra credits, is Declan Pomeroy, a photographer of fey creatures who is twenty-two years younger than Steven. The woods are a magical place, and he quickly finds himself falling under the spell of the free-spirited photographer. Confusion wars with desire as Steven succumbs to the feelings welling up inside. But, sadly, summer camp always must end. Can a man who has just found himself really leave the person that makes his heart sing?
REVIEW:
This was a really sweet story, once things started getting figured out and Steven let go. I had to laugh, though, because I felt so old reading this. The vinyl records, the older music, considered classics now. The kids nowadays have no clue. And it was cracking me up as Declan was trying to figure out who these people were.
Steven has been floundering trying to write his next book in his spy series. He feels dried up. Like he can’t come up with one more word. So his publisher suggests he go somewhere to try to unwind from the latest divorce and writer’s block. When his daughter suggests a place in the Catskills, he doesn’t plan on going until something changes his mind. What he doesn’t expect is that he’s not getting anywhere in his writing at this place. It’s so country. He’s frustrated and decides to take a break, and meets a young man who changes his life. Declan is a young student and photographer, and has such a zest for life, Steven can’t help but be drawn in to him. And has him questioning everything about himself. But his writing is back and has taken a different turn. One that doesn’t have his publisher happy. But all Steven knows, is he needs Declan in his life for good, but when summer is over, he loses what he had. And now he has to decide what is more important in his life.
Declan is just the sweetest. I love his zest for life. The way he photographs everything. The way it was described, you felt like you were looking at what he was shooting or shot. It was amazing. But I love the way he loves too. He jumps into everything with both feet. It doesn’t mean he doesn’t get hurt. He does. Jumping in with both feet can have its repercussions. But he still does everything with all that’s in him. And it’s a breath of fresh air. I love him. And he’s perfect for Steven. Because he gets Steven out of his comfort zone. He shows a new life to Steven that he needed so bad. Not just for his work, but for his life. He needed someone to show him there’s more to life than being grumpy and not living life. And Declan gave Steven the boost he needed.
It’s a good little story. Not real long, but it’s what’s needed.
