REVIEW:
Rory is visiting his parents in his hometown of Hollyridge at the holidays, but he’s not having a great time. He doesn’t feel like his parents understand him at all – not the gay, not his art, not his job as a barista in Seattle. He really needs a break so he walks downtown from their house – minus his coat. He happens upon a bookstore that definitely wasn’t there the last time he was in town. It’s got an adorable sign with a dog and upon entering, he meets said dog 🙂 He also meets the handsome and kind owner, Brett. He’s not sure what to do with all this, but he somehow manages to invite himself along with Brett to walk his dog. He also ends up having dinner with Brett and his friends who own a winery. But as the evening wears on, Brett shares that he’s a widower and his husband passed away a couple of years before. Unsure how to process this news, Rory leaves and ends up heading back to Seattle.
Brett (and his friends) are bit dismayed that Rory is gone and that Brett wasn’t able to explain where he is in his life now. But Brett does make a connection with Rory’s mother and he comes up with a plan to be convince Rory that he’s ready to move on with his life and he’d like to get to know Rory better. It’s a pretty good plan and it works quite well. 😀
This was really a cute story! I loved Rory and Brett and even Brett’s dog, Lucille. I also really like the relationship aspect of Rory’s parents and their realization that they can have more of a connection with their only son. There are also some additional repercussions to Rory and Brett’s budding relationship that really made this a winning story that would be too spoilery to share here, but suffice to say that Family is what you make it. Delightful short story that provides a happy ending and some sweet and sexy moments along the way. Recommended.
