Detective Jamal Tuma was used to life not going his way. As an omega in an alpha dominated world, he’d experienced more than his fair share of bigotry when he’d decided to enter the police force. His life had been put in danger more times than he could count for no other reason than alphas above him thought it wouldn’t matter if he’d died on the job. Yet, in the six years he’d been a cop, he’d never come quite so close to death as he did when an alpha doctor didn’t feel it necessary to treat his gunshot wound.
Brace Jacobs had never given much thought to the omegas in their world. As a doctor, he’d taken an oath to heal, no matter their color, creed, sex, or even their omega status. But not everyone felt the way he did. It didn’t sit well with Brace, but he didn’t go out of his way to fix the problem, either. That was until Detective Jamal Tuma came through those doors and nearly died with Brace’s hands deep in his body as he fought to save the omega.
Warning: Hijinx and mayhem will ensue, as these two fight the world around them, as well as their own ridiculous preconceived notions, as they hope to build a future together. But that might be easier said than done when there are stalkers, assholes, idiots, and one very determined Patient Care Coordinator, who will kick everyone’s ass while planning a circus, if that’s what it takes for them to begin Breaking Barriers.
“I need more suction,” Dr. Jacobs said urgently, yet keeping his voice calm. He’d never seen the point in shouting. It only made everyone more stressed than they already were. “Did you get ahold of Dr. Sutton?” he asked Jennica when he saw her move back into place.
“He was five minutes away,” Jennica told him. “He said he would call as he entered the operating suite.”
There was no way that was going to happen. Brace had a much clearer view of the damage and moving this man wasn’t going to happen. “You’re going to need to call him back. There is no way the detective will make the transport to the O.R. Dr. Sutton is going to have to come to us.”
Jennica nodded and went to the phone hooked to the far wall. Each ‘room’ in the E.R. had two hard walls, one along the back, and one that separated it from the ‘room’ next to it. A curtain closed the room from the walkway as well as the ‘room’ on the other side.
“Dr. Sutton is on his way,” Jennica called out as Brace was alternately asking for more suction and requesting clamps to stave off the bleeders.
He glanced up at her in thanks, but his gaze landed on Ronan Hart, the Hospital Director. He couldn’t stop the scowl from forming as he saw the man he partially blamed for this mess.
“This,” Brace nodded down to where his hands were nearly elbow deep in the patient’s stomach, “is thanks to Dr. Pierce refusing to treat him.”
It galled him that any doctor would leave a patient with a gunshot wound. “The fucker actually had the gall to treat a drunk Alpha with IV fluids so he wouldn’t have a hangover instead of treating Detective Tuma.” Brace wasn’t one to swear too often while working, for he found it rarely helped. Except, in this case, it was more than warranted, it was absolutely necessary. “When I came out from working on another gunshot wound, that ass had gone to lunch, leaving only Case Weber to work on the detective.”
Thank God Case had been there, or they’d be having this conversation over a dead body.
“You need to fire that asshole.” Anger came off Brace in waves. “Or I’m warning you now, I’m going to end up decking that fucker.”
It was probably for the best that Dr. Sutton strode through the curtain at that point, or Brace feared he would have said something even more inappropriate than he already had.
He couldn’t explain the strong emotions pouring through him as he tried to save this Omega’s life. People died. It was a part of the job. Yet, for some reason, the thought of this man dying had knots forming in his stomach.
No. He would do whatever it took to save this man’s life.
