Someone’s framing him. Someone’s stalking him. And as old secrets come to light, Tom finds his adversary always one step ahead. Will Foster is the only man Tom trusts to help. But Tom brutally burned all bridges between them two years before, and Will paid a bitter price.
If he wants to survive, Tom must prove his innocence to Will – and to the world.
REVIEW:
Object of Desire is the second book in the Bitter Legacy series, and even though it is a second book you do not have to have read the first one to pick this up. They are only very loosely connected and the previous couple were mostly only mentioned in passing. I still very much recommend reading Bitter Legacy but that’s because you shouldn’t miss out on a great book.
I loved the first book, and I couldn’t wait to listen to this one to see if the magic was still there. And it was. Just like before we had a mystery intertwined with a romance. The mystery was the focal point and the relationship/s surrounded it for the duration.
We follow Tom Gray, the accidental super-model. I say accidental because he did not intend for that career path, he had his eyes set on forensics work – but life happened and now he lived in the lime light as a sought after model. Things were moving along, until one day when he was framed for the murder of his employer. Add a stalker and a police detective convinced of his guilt and things aren’t looking all that good for Tom… So he takes matters into his own hands and starts investigate himself, but what he finds is a darker and more twisted tale than he could have ever imagined.
I have to give credit where it’s due; Dal Maclean has an amazing talent for writing about messy relationships. They aren’t the typical kind of romances we’ve read (and loved) hundreds times before. They feel fresh, messy but fresh. And not messy in the added drama for the sake of it, because that wasn’t it. The relationships were just flawed. They were genuine and real, I believed in them. Real life is messy and I can’t think of a single (RL) relationship I’ve been in or seen that haven’t been messy. Nothing is perfect, and Maclean gives us that in the very best way. I mean half the time I didn’t know what was going on, which way was up or down, and I loved every second of it.
It wasn’t only the relationships that were messy. The mystery part was too. There were so many twists and turns throughout the book that when you thought “it’s got to be like this” something else happened to turn it completely on its head. It kept you on your toes and had more than a few surprises in the bag, that’s one thing that’s for sure. I want more of this!
Garry Furlong did an outstanding performance of this book. I mean the myriad of accents alone had me singing with joy. Well that is if I did sing ;). Furlong is a great voice actor and he has so many different, and credible, voices. It makes it easy and effortless for the listener to follow the story and bask in it all. From the start Furlong drew you into this world and immersed you in all its messy glory right up until the end.
I can’t wait to see what this duo will produce next and I know I’ll probably be amongst the first in line to listen to them.
