REVIEW:
I do want to warn you, if you’ve read book one, you will know some things happened to Tan. Well, to Mack and Austin as well, but Tan the worst. So there are triggers that cause PTSD blackouts and flashbacks. It deals with rape and beatings. It doesn’t go into major detail as of yet, but there are enough details to please be careful, if it’s a trigger for you.
Austin, Mack and Tan have been doing all they can to survive in this little farm while they figure out if they should move on or stay. Especially since they’ve just had the first frost and know that bad weather is coming soon. But things are kind of taken out of their hands when 4 unexpected people show up, wanting food and maybe refuge for a day or two. Things seemed to be ok for the moment, until the spider bots showed up and quickly followed by the aliens themselves attacking. But it goes downhill even more, when the other people see that Mack is friends with one of the aliens. One thing after another happens, leaving bad injuries and death all around. And Austin, Mack and Tan don’t know if and how they are going to make it through. One thing they do know, from now on, it’s just them. They can’t take a chance on any others anymore. And that’s if they survive themselves. Because they know what the aliens are up to and if they keep it up, no one may survive.
Relationships take hits. It’s all a part of the work it takes to make one work. Especially when there are three people in the relationship as well. It takes a bit of extra work. But with the strain of the aliens and everything else going on, plus past things popping up in their minds, it’s putting things in an awkward position. The emotions are on overload, things are being taken the wrong way, and it’s taking time for them to process things in their minds. I don’t envy them at all. Trying to deal with their own minds and each other in a normal situation is hard, hard work, but in the stress they are dealing with, it’s even worse. But I admire them, because they keep sticking together, backing each other up, supporting each other and just plain being there when it counts. They are learning to speak up. Some things are ready to be shared yet, but they are learning they can count on and trust each other. Which is more than any of them really had before.
It’s a great sci-fi. I’m curious how book 3 is going to turn out, because there is a lot stacking up against these three right now. And the world in general. And Austin more than anyone, feels it’s time to try to stop all this. Mack agrees. Tan is reluctant, but who can blame him. It’s scary. But if you haven’t read these two, you need to. It’s a good series.
