REVIEW:
One of my favorite tropes is that which involves a police/military/SWAT/Special Forces storyl ine. I love my stories with action and romance, forbidden trysts, and all these secrets that have to be kept for their safety, etc. We have different and numerous agencies that are doing a lot of operations all over the world. Those belonging to the Marshal Services involve the protection of high-valued targets, political or otherwise. Most of the time, they protect informants or witnesses, going as far as getting these people into the Witness Protection Program. Now, I am no way as informed as I want to be with regards to these agencies, I get most of what I know from what I read or listened to, in the news, documentaries and novels.
James Kairo (Kai) is a Private Investigator who has a lot of “quirks,” one of which is coloring his hair in different colors. He comes from a rich family and he is very smart but he was banned from Stanford University for shooting a gay porno film, and from his family for being gay. He had some money but due to his innocence, he was duped and lost it.
Gannin West, a no-nonsense Marshal, was anonymously asked to help out Kai. When someone called him to tell him that Kai is in trouble, he goes to help out the guy as fast as he can. Gannin never takes time for rest and relaxation and his teammates have been urging him to take some time off so he sees this as n opportunity to do that despite the fact that he will be helping out someone in trouble with the mob.
Working together to find out why there is a hit on Kai means they have to be close to each other most of the time. The underlying attraction that has been simmering between them since they met surfaces in full force.
Although the story is fast-paced, there are some dialogues that I felt were unnecessary or unwarranted. And although they already have a little bit of history, the complete mutual trust given to each other was just too fast for me. I mean, for two people who are in the business of investigating and determining lies from truth, they trusted each other wholeheartedly in such a short amount of time. Maybe it is just me as I am a very romantic woman so I would love to be wined and dined, but again, they are trying to avoid a killer! They are running out of time as well.
So, we are talking about a “hit” being put out for Kai. Being under a lot of stress, and between running around and having sex in the thick of it can be attributed to adrenaline as just casual sex. Eventually though, this could develop into more. This book has a lot of action, but we already know who the enemies are from the get-go. The dialogue and the consistency of every scene can still be improved. I personally look forward to the next book in this series.
