It’s been less than a year since Lane Perkins left his controlling ex and the big city behind for a new job and a new life in small town Watson Hollow, NY. When he meets enigmatic widower Jared Atherton, Lane can’t deny he feels a pull, but there’s no way he’s getting involved with another man so soon. Jared has enough on his plate as a single father and Alpha of the smallest pack in North America. He’s not interested in a relationship, especially not with the aggravating human teacher who knows nothing of his world.
Fate has other plans however, and when a threat to Lane’s life leads him within the walls of Jared’s estate, they’ll be forced to face their attraction once and for all. But will it be enough to save them both from the wrath of a bitter rival?
REVIEW:
This is a new to me author and I must say that the first book in this series is off to a pretty decent start. The only problem for me with this book was its flow. There were a few times where you had to connect the pieces yourself. For instance, the prologue kicks off the story but there was little to no follow up in the subsequent chapters leaving the reader to sort of piece together and speculate the who and what of it all. You do eventually figure out who the people were in the prologue of the story were, but you just sort of have to piece it together and guess as the story progresses. And even then, you not really sure if it’s right. There flow of the story wasn’t consistent; it lags and the events are a bit choppy in some parts. However, this didn’t take away from my enjoyment of it.
The characters were wonderful. I absolutely loved how the author included the trans and non-binary characters in the story. It wasn’t forced or filled with stereotypes. There were no stunts and shows; their entries were seamless and very well written. Lucky and Aeron actually stole the show for me; they were my favorite characters in the book.
I really liked Jared and Lane’s character. Even though they were the MCs, I felt like I only got bits and pieces of their pasts. I really would’ve liked to have gotten a bit more of their back stories as I felt like you don’t get to know their characters very well. You get flashes of past events, memories here and there and that made the flow a bit choppy.
The storyline was really very good; I enjoyed it quite a bit, actually. It’s been a while since I read anything in paranormal genre and this book was lovely way for me to get back into it. The author managed to do a really great job of creating a world with these wonderful magical beings.
I absolutely enjoyed the book overall. The presentation (cover and editing) were excellent. The flow could be better but that doesn’t take away from how well written and how well thought out the characters were. The ending also sets up perfectly for the next book in the series.
All in all, the book turned out rather nicely and was a great start to what looks like will be a lovely series. One that I am really looking forward to reading.
