Dog wrangler Preston Echo has been in love with his brother’s best friend, copilot, and business partner since high school—and Damien Ward knew it. As Preston grew into a stunning, hard-willed man, Damien began to dream of Preston too.
Then Damien almost died in a helicopter crash. While his physical wounds are slowly healing, the blows to his self-confidence and goodwill are almost worse. His body is broken and he’s afraid to fly—how can Preston love him now?
When Preston’s brother goes on a search-and-rescue mission and disappears in an earthquake zone in Mexico, Preston and Damien are thrown together in an effort to find him and bring him back. Preston’s merciless honesty—and relentless passion—may leverage Damien into his bed, but can Damien overcome his fears to allow himself to stay there?
REVIEW:
I knew this was going to be kind of a rough story. With Damien’s rescue at the end of the first book, he had a lot of recovering to do. With constant surgeries and near death experiences, Damien feels like less of a man now and is afraid of doing the one thing he has always loved. Flying. So I knew this was going to be a rough story. A kind of tearjerker and I was right. It’s a beautiful story in the end, but it’s a long journey to get through to the end. It takes a lot of discoveries, hurt filled talks, some down right in your face truths, and a young man who refuses to back down or give up.
Preston has had a crush and been half in love with Damien for years. When Damien went down in that crash and almost died, Preston was crushed, and crushed that couldn’t be the one that rescued him and apparently the one Damien didn’t want. He always knew Damien looked at him like the kid brother of his best friend, but he wanted to change that outlook. Especially when he truly knew Damien wanted him back. But after all the surgeries and all the crap that happened with Damien’s leg, Damien doesn’t feel whole anymore. And he’s been lost in himself and quiet for too long. And quite frankly, Preston has had enough. Especially when he sees Damien being sick over flying when it’s always been the one thing he’s loved more than anything. So now Preston has to get Damien to see him and see that they can be good together and to not give up on the one thing he’s loved most of his life.
When something bad happens, it’s hard to recover. I know I had a bad experience on a horse…not as bad as Preston in this story, but bad enough, that like Preston, I don’t want on another again. Doesn’t mean I don’t love them or won’t pet them and such but I will never get on one again. People who have car crashes, plane crashes, or different kinds of accidents, it leaves them scarred and afraid to “get back on that horse” so to speak. So I get where Damien is coming from. He went through absolute hell with his leg. Not knowing whether he’d make out alive or not. It was tragic. And like Preston and horses, getting behind the controls of a plane, makes him ill. I hate it for him. Especially when it’s something you love so, so much. But what I love about this book, is Preston. His brain is wired a little differently so he doesn’t get things like a lot of people do, but it doesn’t stop him from going after what he wants. It doesn’t stop him from giving up on what he wants and on Damien. And pushing Damien to be the person he was, not the closed mouth person he’s become. Although Preston is a quieter man, he misses the chatter of Damien. The nonsense that he and his brother used to spout back and forth and he’s determined to get that back.
It’s got moments of tearjerking as only Amy can deliver lol. But it’s oh so good. It’s worth every uphill battle they have to go through to get to the end. It’s worth the fights, the talks, the shutdowns and definitely worth the finally letting go and realizing what they can have. Another great story.
