Rhys Powell and Derek Scott are divorcing. Mistakes have been made, lines have been crossed, and there’s no going back. Both men are exhausted and ready to move on.
But their daughter is getting married soon. In the name of not putting a damper on her wedding, Derek and Rhys agree to keep the divorce on the down-low and show up as the happy couple everyone still believes they are.
And between a roller coaster of a road trip and the love and joy surrounding the wedding…Derek and Rhys just might remember why they fell for each other in the first place.
Are they only kidding themselves? Or can a rekindled spark really light the way to forgiveness?
REVIEW:
Derek and Rhys have been together a long time. During a rough patch, one of them has an ill-advised one night stand with another man. In this case, Rhys is beyond sorry that he cheated one bad night. He didn’t try to hide it – he confessed immediately knowing that there was every chance he would lose his relationship, but he couldn’t lie. Derek is devastated of course. He wants to hate Rhys – and surely he did – particularly at first. Their daughter’s wedding causes them to try to hide the cracks in their marriage as they don’t want to detract from their daughter’s wedding happiness.
Best laid plans. Of course they aren’t lucky enough to hide everything from everyone. In the end though, this might not be the worst thing that happens. The possibility of truly giving up on everything they have built together and their shared history gives Derek pause. Is forgiveness really the worst thing that could happen? Can Derek really hate Rhys – or what his mistake has done to their marriage? Is there a way forward for these two? Can they find a path back to each other in the end?
So this story is quite angsty – as you can imagine when it’s a long-term couple who are dissolving their marriage. I know folks – particularly romance readers – who have VERY strong feelings about cheating and demand certain things happen when someone cheats – namely a lot of punitive punishment. I really appreciated the way this author handled this particular scenario in this story. I don’t think anyone can judge another person’s relationship and how they handle it when looking in from the outside. In this case, it wasn’t like there was some magic wand 😉 that fixed all their problems. The author injects a huge dose of reality into their reconciliation attempt as well as their road trip 🙂 Fair warning – even though this couple is breaking up, there are plenty of smexy times in this story. As usual Michael Farraiuolo does a fantastic job in voicing these characters. He is one of my absolute favorite narrators and I was not disappointed by his stellar job on this one either. Recommended for those who love second chances and reality based story telling.
