BLURB:
Hunter Dane and Camden Snow have settled into a satisfying routine of solving murders and hanging at the club, when they aren’t expressing their affection for one another. Vigorously. A great life in an idyllic location. Until a skinny kid who barely came up to Cam’s chin sought out Detective Lieutenant Dane…
“I saw my father last night,” Asher Gamble told him. “He said Jason Furney’s going to die and people will say I did it.”
Hunt frowned. The boy’s name seemed familiar. “Tell me the rest of it.”
Asher locked his gaze on Hunt’s as intractably as Cam ever had.
“My father killed my mother and my brother when I was two years old. He died in prison four years ago.”
So much for routine.
REVIEW:
Note: This is the 4th story in this series. It is recommended that these books be read in order to understand the relationship between Hunt and Cam and the history that they share.
Hunt and Cam are working well together – despite some jarring moments in the last case that scared them. They are also enjoying their time at Cam’s house in the foothills. They do have some knowledge of Cam’s “neighbors” but given the nature of the development, everyone has a lot of privacy. When they are contacted about meeting a kid in the neighborhood under the auspices of being a fan of Cam’s, it turns out that is a ruse to entice our guys into a completely different scenario. This conspiracy touches a lot of levels and involves a lot of seemingly unrelated incidents.
I just don’t want to spoil any of the plot of this mystery because it’s absolutely fascinating and really I couldn’t possibly describe it very coherently anyway. I was surprised where all of these disparate pieces led and how they came together. It’s a very interesting subject – psychic abilities – proving or disproving that they exist and who has a vested interest is keeping things under wraps. The various players are surprising and government interests are also involved 😉 Hunt’s team gets into the action – peripherally at first and it’s great to learn more about them both as individuals and how they work as a team. There’s also a bunch of scary and dangerous moments for both civilians and the team that give Hunt pause as the leader of this unit. One of the other key takeaways from this story is how much more we learn about Hunt’s family and his past. This gives a lot more insight into who Hunt really is – both for Cam and the reader.
Oh man! This is another super twisty-turny mystery for Cam and Hunter. It starts off simply enough – a seemingly psychic kid reaches out for help. But that’s where simple ends. There are so many shifts and changes and seemingly unrelated people and deaths and it’s a race to the finish to see if they can figure out who is behind it and what the end game really is and stop the murder. Fascinating stuff. I particularly enjoyed getting more information on Hunt’s background and who he is and how he thinks. Cam learns so much during this case that if anything makes him even more fascinated by Hunt – and let’s face it – he’s 100% in when it comes to Hunt. I am still completely obsessed with this couple and I’m on to the next book. Highly recommended – this series is my find of the year!
