REVIEW:
Well Mrs. Nell has done it again. Packed a punch in a short story. And I loved it. Sometimes it hurts to go against everything you were taught or stand up for what you believe, but sometimes you have to put a stop to something that should have been stopped a long time ago. Or put a stop to something that should have never been started to begin with. And then remember who your true family is.
Auden just went out to get a breather. He loves his family, but sometimes it’s just too much at once. When he gets to the creek, he sees someone and is surprised at who it is. Porter Eldin. The family’s arch enemy. But he doesn’t understand why and when he asks what happens, no one will tell him. But Poe does. And it breaks Auden’s heart because he knows what Poe has to deal with now every time he has to deal with his family. That one meeting has led them to dates, and dating full time. But Auden is afraid to tell his family because of who Poe is related to. When the family finds out, it’s very awkward and tense. And Auden is wondering, is he going to have to choose between his family and Poe? He doesn’t want to, but he will, and a lot of people will be unhappy with his decision. Maybe a miracle at Christmas will make it.
Bullying and homophobia are no joke. It’s a horrid, horrid thing and I for one, really get sick of it. We are all made to be different and I don’t understand why everyone is so determined to squash something that is different and good. But even though Auden has a understanding family, they aren’t so understanding about Poe and that makes him unhappy. Especially when Poe ends up hurt. He decides it’s time to put his foot down to everyone, no matter the cost to him. Poe means everything to him and that’s what’s important. Family, well meaning or not, can cause toxicity and sometimes we have to make families of our own that are not blood. It may suck, yes. But if it takes the toxic out of your life, you are better for it. Thankfully, sometimes it takes someone finally standing up to make people see what the truth really is. And make the changes. Some will never change. And as long as you’ve done your part, then the rest is up to them. Make the family you deserve and leave the rest to their misery.
