All Hector Cruz wanted was a place to call his own, but buying a rundown farm came with more problems than he’d been expecting. Between the needed repairs, the problems at work, and the man hiding out in his basement, he was starting to wonder if finding a place to call home was worth the headache.
Wilson Jacks was hiding. He’d done some really horrible things and now he was paying the price for his crimes. Being alone in the world made him ache for all the things he couldn’t have. He had no friends, no home, no one to call his own, but that was a punishment in itself, one he felt he richly deserved.
When his world collides with the one man who doesn’t expect perfection, learning to accept that he might not be a monster isn’t as hard as accepting the fact that Hector is attracted to him. The fragile peace Will finds in Hector’s arms begins to shatter when the chaos he’s been avoiding comes knocking on the door.
REVIEW:
This is #18 in the ongoing Cade Creek series. Okay, so… I’m reading the books out of sequence which I don’t recommend as they are definitely not standalone reads.
This installment brings us the story of Hector and Will. Both characters were featured in book #17’s Fit to be Tied. Poor Will. His was a lonely existence. He shuffled from foster home to home after the death of his mother and never knowing his father. He was forced to do something that lead to multiple people being hurt. He’s served his community service (although I low key think he shouldn’t have been made to serve seeing as he was forced) and he just disappeared afterwards. But Cade Creek being the place of forgiveness and second chances, the sheriff becomes concerned when he disappears after his community service was finished. It appears that Will was hiding in the basement of Happy’s old home.
Hector’s character is the tough biker. Solid, dependable and hardworking. His hard work and sacrifice working as a bouncer in the town’s bar that he was able to save and purchase the old farmhouse where Will was hiding in the basement.
The story runs along the familiar lines of the series. Both men meet and start to fall for each other. Then a series of unfortunate events necessitates them to fight against whatever forces that threaten their lives and happiness to come out the victor. Even though the storylines are predictable, they are really nice reads. This novella was nice and I rooted for Will. That’s what makes this series so lovely. The lengths are just perfect and each character makes you glad to see them get their HEAs.
