BLURB:
Adam’s first love, Zeke, is dead. However, Adam is soon given a proposition: a mysterious elder will bring Zeke back to life if the two of them participate in a Big Brother-esque study on the interactions between reanimated corpses and humans. While Adam is overjoyed to have Zeke back, Zeke is devastated by his new state. He can’t be seen undisguised in public, especially not by his grieving family.
Adam must decide whether to keep the agreement and continue the experiment without knowing when it’ll end, or to break it and face losing Zeke a second and final time.
REVIEW:
This was a short book and a quick read. Its premise is unique and the ideas fresh and fascinating. The characters of Zeke and Adam have their individual voices and there was some character development, although, understandably, this was limited due to the shortness of the book.
My problem with the book is in the writing itself. The editing isn’t bad, but the grammar can be off and there’s a fair amount of head-hopping. My main issue is with the language. This is a Young Adult book, but it reads as if it’s been written by a well-educated, much older person who enjoys the classics and speaks BBC English. The language just doesn’t fit the characters, sentence construction is stiff and formal and sometimes it just doesn’t flow.
I would really like to see this book polished because the content could be so good. The story is imaginative and enticing. It’s fresh (more than Zeke is) and there are some nice twists. The characters are engaging and I’d like to hear more of them. If only the writing itself could be brought up to standard, I would not hesitate to recommend this book. As it is, if you are interested only in the content rather than the structure this would be a great, quick read and will leave you with some thoughts to ponder on the nature of mortality and just how far you would be willing to go for someone you love.
