REVIEW:
Sigh. This was a sweet read and ticked all the boxes for me on all counts. It’s sweet, spicy and just the right amount of kitschy. Sure, it could be predictable at times, but that is utterly forgiven, and part of its undeniable charm.
I tend to shy away from books with children because it’s hard to write children convincingly and so many don’t. I took a chance on this one because I was already a fan of the author. I’m glad I did. Mia is funny, sassy and a typical six-year-old mix of adult and baby. All the time I was reading her, I was thinking of a friend’s daughter who is of a similar age. Mia is right on the button.
The writing is smooth and flows easily. It’s a short book and it was no effort to read in an evening. I’m very glad of that because it’s not the day for an all-nighter, and I would have found it hard to put down before the end. I can’t say it had me on the edge of my seat because it’s not that kind of book, but it is the kind of book that pushes you along with the story so every page, every situation resolved leads into another. It’s so smooth that you’ve hardly started before you finish and realize there was a whole lot of in between.
The story is a simple one, and not new by any means. Poor single father in a struggling business, falls for his daughter’s teacher who turns out to be rich. There are some twists though, and it’s not Stanton’s money that takes these people where they need to go. And anyway, familiar or not, it was a wonderful, warm story, flawlessly told.
There was a peppering of possible magic going on through the story. Hints that something might have been going on in the background, but nothing concrete enough to be able to say aha it’s an angel. I like to think there was an angel, maybe more and I always think the sound of windchimes is so magical, especially in snow, but it’s not an overtly paranormal story by any means.
If you want a satisfying novella, filled with sugar and spice and a teacher who smells of chocolate, then this is the book for you. It’s heartwarming, funny, sexy and with just a dash of biting realism to keep the tooth decay at bay.
