Writer John Pierce Belhaven was murdered before he could reveal the name of another killer—one connected to the biggest scandal to rock Albuquerque in years. Two of the city’s most prominent citizens—Barron Voxlightner and Dr. Walther Stabler—vanished in 2004, along with fifty million dollars looted from Voxlightner Precious Metals Recovery Corp. It only makes sense that poking into that disappearance cost Belhaven his life.
But BJ isn’t so sure.
He’s agreed to help novice detective Roy Guerra reopen the old case—which the wealthy and influential Voxlightner family doesn’t want dredged up. But Belhaven was part of their family, and that connection could’ve led to his murder. Or did the sixty-year-old author die because of a sordid sexual affair?
REVIEW:
This is my first time reading this series and I definitely have to go back and read the others. I love a good thriller/ murder mystery and this one did not disappoint. It was a little slow in spots, but I think it was more because you had to have descriptions or back stories and such. But overall, I am loving this series. It’s got a great cast of main characters, a damn good plot, lots of lines to be chased to figure out the ending. It was very good.
Vince, as his partner Paul calls him, has gotten himself involved in a case that caused a big stir years ago. A scandal set up by a few people to basically scam people out of millions of dollars. The problem is, it worked to a point. The two main people that started up and disappeared after a confrontation, and was never to be seen or heard from again. The money gone as well. But now a writer has found some clues that more was going on that what was believed. And BJ is hired to investigate officially by one of the mothers. The more he digs, the more he’s shocked at some of what he’s finding. And the more he digs, the more people are being taken out and he and his partner are being warned off. But when he finds out about the two original scammers, he’s still determined to see this thing to an end. Because they are tied together and yet not. There are different murderers and after especially putting his partner in danger, BJ is going to finish. Because now, it’s personal.
This is how I love my mysteries. Lots of ways it could go. Lots of different suspects, lots of different murders that lead to a connection and yet not. The digging, just all of it. It was one hell of a book. I really enjoyed how BJ leads his cases. The way he works with people. But I really loved the way that they are so perfectly flawed and know it. It’s so real. It could be a story based on a real life thing. That’s how real these characters are. Their lives aren’t perfect. They get it wrong from time to time. Their relationships have problems sometimes due to the consequences of the cases they take on. It’s dangerous work sometimes. Especially with cases like this.
And the way the twists were in this one, I knew who one of the murderers was. I figured it out pretty quick. And why. But the others, blew me away. But people do strange things for greed, lust or whatever. Hell, sometimes you breathe wrong and it will send people over the edge. But the writing and the way this was set up was spot on and I loved every page. I will definitely be going back and reading the first 5. And sincerely hope there’s another to come in the future
