Foxes are vermin.
Australian sheep farmers regard them as an enemy to be shot on sight and hung from the branches of an old gum tree.
But not all foxes are just foxes.
Connor Coutts could be the last surviving male Furborn in Victoria, maybe in the whole country, a heavy burden for a teenager. His life’s path is clear— protect what’s left of the Furborn line. That is until someone new arrives at the MacKenzie sheep farm. Spencer MacKenzie, with his long black hair and gothic style, is a strange sight in Connor’s forest, but Fate throws the two teenagers together to save their families.
Can Connor trust Spencer to keep his life-or-death secret, or will he hang on the tree?
REVIEW:
This is another of those books I would like to see another of. Maybe with the MCs being a bit older and accepting their positions in life. My only issue with this book is it was hard to read about the fox hanging tree. I was in agreement with Connor, Spencer and more. It’s disgusting. Unfortunately, it is often too true in life. It’s why I hate zoos. But this isn’t about me and I’m not going to start a war here lol. This is a very good book. About shifters. Fox shifters to be exact. And the last surviving of a particular line. As well as letting a human become involved in an age old secret.
Spencer was not a happy camper. He doesn’t mind being on the farm and visiting with his nan and pa, but moving here was a different story. But after Pa’s stroke, the farm needed the help and they needed to help him. Family is important. When they come back, he ends up seeing a beautiful red haired boy, around his age, that just captured his attention like nothing else. But the boy just sneered and ended up walking away. When they meet up again, he learns Connor is crude and rude but he keeps trying to be nice. It isn’t until Connor is hurt by lightning in a storm, trying to save his sister’s mates body from the god awful tree, that Connor and Spencer start talking more. Spencer knows something is up, because everytime Connor mentions his family, he slips a bit with words that are clueing Spencer into some things. And when they visit his home and see the foxes, more things are adding up. But it couldn’t be possible right? But when Spencer has to leave suddenly because of his best friend, that everything turns to crap. Connor’s family is threatened, Spencer’s little sister ends up missing, and a surprise that is a shock to everyone. And with the way things are looking, it’s not going to get better.
I feel for Spencer. Having a teen of mine own, I get the emo phase. I get how they feel, especially when they are uprooted and don’t have many friends. They feel lost and disconnected. So when he’s uprooted to the farm, he’s happy he’s with family, but that’s about it. He’s had to give up the life he’s known. The good thing is at least he has his horse and he can ride more often and be with him more often. Then he met Connor. He knew the boy was different but couldn’t figure out how until later on. But as they draw closer and the attraction heats up a bit, he realizes he cares for Connor and his family very much. He’s also realized he’s been a bit selfish about some things and maybe it’s time to do a bit of growing up and moving on. It helps when he’s accepted by Connor’s family. Which for Spencer, is huge. Especially when he finds out more secrets from his own family.
For Connor, it’s hard. He’s having to trust a human with a secret only his family knows. But he knows he has to tell Spencer the truth, especially when Spencer all but tells him he knows and has figured it out on his own. But if their relationship has any chance of growing and moving forward, Spencer has to know the truth as well. All of it. It doesn’t mean life is now easy peasy. Spencer isn’t about to run off and tell the family secret, but there are other factors involved that are making life hard for Connor and in essence, for Spencer. It’s going to take a lot to move past things and move forward.
Nothing like a bit of teen angst, mixed with some good shifter story. I really enjoyed this book and again, would like to see more of these guys. It feels like there needs to be more to their story.
