To battle an ancient evil, the greatest weapon each hero will have is each other.
Hundreds of years ago, facing defeat, the witch Morgana sent monsters into the future to vanquish a humanity King Arthur wouldn’t be able to save. The King might have won the battle, but now, centuries later, a few chosen men will have to fight the war.
Merlin always hated being named after some mythological wizard. His dad had been obsessed with the magic man of King Arthur’s Court before his untimely death – a loss that had sent Mel reeling in a downward spiral. He is ill-prepared, to say the least, for the outrageous claims of a proper English knight bent on overcoming evil.
Born a commoner, Lancelot was never supposed to be a knight in his own time, never mind now in a modern world he is so woefully untrained to protect. Thrown into a battle centuries in the making, this flawed hero, and a young man too-used to battling monsters of the present day, will have to come together in a last desperate fight to save humanity.
Can Mel and Lance defeat the greatest enemy the world has ever known? Or in the midst of fighting evil, will they discover the real threat has always been a shattered heart?
And what if the one fight they cannot ever hope to win is with themselves?
REVIEW:
Wow. This was one hell of a twist on what history has told us about Arthur and the Knights and all that it entailed. And I LOVED this book. I love the history. I love that you can tell the author did some research. This isn’t just something thrown together. Although, it’s a twist, it’s very factual with some things and it’s just made the book that much better. I can not wait to see how this turns out next, with the next book.
Mel has spent his life fighting nightmares and mourning the loss of his father, his childhood and how his mother turned out. Everything in his life has just been one mass of mess. He was overwrought with grief again as he just lost his grandmother, when out of nowhere he was attacked by this…thing. He had no clue as to what to do and basically was accepting his fate of death, when out of nowhere, someone with a sword came and battled this creature and killed it. Lance was his name and as they laughed over the names they had, Mel being really Merlin, Mel knew something was really going on and he wanted to know what. When having to run from his home again from those things, he was taken to the safety of Lance’s home, and Lance began to explain what was going on. Along with Gawain and a few other of the knights. But what Mel didn’t expect was there was more to the story and Lance apparently didn’t want him. The more they started digging into things and Mel’s place in it, the more secrets and things unfurled. And to their shock, realized Mel was just more than his namesake. So much more. And there was more to the story of what was happening. When Lance was finally starting to accept Mel was his other half, another twist came into this story and threw everything out of control. Now Mel was on the run, his friend Tom, Lucan’s other half, was pissed, and evil was permeating everything. More of those things, Ursus, had appeared then ever before and it was a battle that seemed they were going to lose. Mel had a decision he had to make and it was one he didn’t know he could do. He had to take a life. And the life he had to take would probably destroy everything he had finally just gotten,
Mel has had one hell of a life. Losing his father at a young age, an alcoholic for a mother, and having to turn to prostitution to survive. On top of it, having nightmares of supposed legendary figures, dreams of nothing but fire, losing his grandmother and he’s about lost it. So when he’s attacked by the Ursus, he’s pretty much accepted his fate. I mean how much more worse could his life get. But he’s about to get shown how much worse. And my heart ached for this young man. I mean, a fairy tale of history come to life. That’s how it felt. It’s bad enough his father was obsessed with it and named him Merlin. I guess what made me hurt for him the most though, was knowing what his father had went through. And having him feel guilt and grief for thinking he was the one who killed the man of his world. Of course, it wasn’t his fault, but still. It just seemed like everything just kept piling and piling on and he could only take so much.
The only thing that made things harder for Mel, was Lance himself. I have to admit, I wanted to reach through and shake the crap out of Lance a few times. He’s so hard headed and stubborn. But after living for so many years and seeing the crap he’s had to see, I could imagine Lance being hesitant for anything. Especially when he knew all the facts of the curse and what Merlin had said in his dying breath. It was complicated and hard and Lance had to swallow his pride a lot and admit he was wrong. Even when he’d rather cut his own arm off.
The truth is both Lance and Mel had to let go of some things and accept the inevitable of what was happening. They had to let go of certain things in their pasts and move forward to save their group and the world. Because more evil is coming. And who is coming is the shock of their lives. If they hadn’t see it with their own eyes, they wouldn’t have believed it.
If you guys haven’t gotten a hold of this book, you need to like now. It is an amazing book and I can’t wait to read the next one.
