Relationships—who needs ’em? As a personal-assistant-extraordinaire to one of the top PR firms in Los Angeles, I’ve dedicated most of my life to errand-running and people-pleasing. But when it comes to men, as much as I love to please them in the bedroom, I’m way too busy to give more than that. Fortunately, as far as my options go…well, let’s just say I’m used to getting what I want, whenever I want it.
Unless your name happens to be Sawyer Burke.
I haven’t been in Fever Falls long, but the more time I spend here, the more intrigued I’ve become by the guy with the sexy auburn locks and the no-nonsense attitude. He plays the quiet, bookish part well, but he’s got a problem—I have a talent for reading people, and if there’s one thing I’m certain about, it’s that there’s a wild sex-beast hiding under his clever facade. He thinks screwing around is all a big game to me, but games can be fun, right?
SAWYER
I’ve always been a relationship guy. I never understood the urge to bed a different guy every night. But it hasn’t worked out well for me. The one time I let my guard down with a guy, he crushed me. Broke me. That’s not something I’m eager to risk again, so I focus on my friends, my brother, and my bookstore. Really, it’s better for me. I’m not the kind of guy most men want anyway.
Unfortunately, I can’t get Carter James out of my head. I told myself I hate him—and I should. He’s everything I’m not—loud, sassy…and more than a little annoying. But I want him too, and he’s made no secret of wanting me. I refuse to get caught up in one of his games, but I’m also learning there’s more to Carter than meets the eye. He unleashes something inside me I never knew was there—this dominant sex-god that somehow makes me feel more like me than I ever have.
I can’t let myself fall in love with him. Easier said than done. Carter challenges me in ways I didn’t know I needed. What we share becomes a game of sorts, but not the kind I first thought, and the longer we play, the more likely it is that the losers will be our hearts. We should stop. We should know better. But even if there’s the unlikeliest chance that we might win—well, then—GAME ON.
REVIEW:
This was a fun book. As much as these two circled each other, getting under each other’s skin, it was inevitable I suppose, for them to get together. It made for a fun read. The snark, the sass, the way they challenged each other. But it also made for a hell of a relationship, because in learning to be friends, they learned each other and it made everything more intimate and more special.
Carter has forever been trying to get into Sawyer’s pants, but mostly he likes egging Sawyer on because Sawyer is always so serious. It’s hard to get him to open up and let loose. Carter doesn’t even know if Sawyer ever really has. And he wants to see what’s underneath that cool exterior. Well on a trip they all took, he got to find out. He set Sawyer off by poking the bear too much and finally got to see why Sawyer stays closed off to one night stands or relationships at all. Of course, Carter doesn’t do relationships anyway, but still. He finally found out what was going on and about some of Sawyer’s past and it was hard to see. Unfortunately, Carter’s past wasn’t all sunshine and roses either and he shared too. And something changed that day. They called a truce, so to speak. And it was finally then, they started becoming friends and acknowledging the connection and chemistry between them. To the point, they finally decided to become boyfriends. But the past has a way of creeping up on you and it causes a strain on Carter. And his job becomes a bit of a strain on both of them. But if they want to stay together, they have to figure out what’s important in their lives.
I was so happy to see these two get together. Finally. They compliment each in ways they’ve never had with anyone else. Carter brings Sawyer out of his shell in ways Sawyer himself never thought possible. Never dreamed he’d be able to be like. And Sawyer calms Carter down and sees Carter in a way has never been seen. Sawyer sees into Carter’s soul. He’s seen the good, bad and ugly and doesn’t care about that. I mean, he cares, but in the way, that he knows it has hurt Carter or something else. He wants Carter happy and safe. Not upset or hurt by anyone.
What really impressed me though, was Sawyer’s complete turn around. When he lets go, he really lets go. And it’s like he became a new person. He was finally happy. He was finally free to be the person he wants to be with someone. Not being put down or made to feel less than. I loved this new Sawyer. I love how Carter has freed him. Not to say, they didn’t have to work at it. Nothing comes easy. But it was clearly worth it to both of them and that made all the difference.
