Is it really wrong to want to murder your boss?
Dylan has worked for Gabe for two years. Two long years of sarcastic comments. Two long years of insults, and having to redo the coffee pot four times in the mornings to meet his exacting standards.
Not surprisingly he has devoted a lot of time to increasingly inventive ways to murder Gabe. From stabbing him with a cake fork, to garrotting him with his expensive tie, Dylan has thought of everything.
However, a chance encounter opens his eyes to the attraction that has always lain between them, concealed by the layers of antipathy. There are only two problems – Gabe is still a bastard, and he makes wedding planners look like hardened pessimists.
But what happens when Dylan starts to see the real Gabe? What happens when he starts to fall in love with the warm, wary man that he sees glimpses of as the days pass?
Because Gabe is still the same commitment shy, cold man that he’s always been, or is he? Has Dylan had the same effect on Gabe, and has his solid gold rule of no commitment finally been broken? With his heart taken Dylan desperately needs to know, but will he get hurt trying to find the answers?
REVIEW:
This was the first book I read by this author nearly two years ago. After the second book in this series, she became an autobuy for me. One of the things that Lily Morton is an absolute master at is the banter – and not just between her main characters. Between ALL the characters – Dylan and Gabe, Dylan and Jude, Dylan and Henry even. Dylan’s voice had me absolutely laughing out loud from the get-go. His sharp wit and his snark and very British sarcastic voice won me over immediately.
Gabe is horribly broken. He knows this. He thinks he’s protecting Dylan – but of course he’s really protecting himself. Dylan, for his part, realizes part of Gabe’s story, and he fools himself for a little while, but he definitely figures out early that he’s absolutely falling for Gabe. So do a few others 😉
I absolutely adored this writer’s style and voice. I just could not wait to see what happened next. And when the inevitable drama around Dylan’s heart and Gabe’s overwhelming fear comes, I was devastated for Dylan – even though I know he would be OK because he’s that strong in his belief in himself and in love.
Gabe’s growth is painful to see. He just can’t accept that love is worth having or that anyone would stay given his past and the difficulty he’s been through. He lashes out rather than latches on to the best thing that has ever happened to him.
I also loved the secondary characters – particularly Dylan’s family, his best mate Jude and Gabe’s best mate Henry. They figure prominently in the next stories in this series and I cannot wait to listen to them too 🙂 Joel Leslie once again hits it out of the park. He does such a great job with the voices and accents. I really enjoyed every single second of his narration – even the devastating parts. Don’t miss this one folks. It’s a gem from start to finish!
