To save his soul, he’ll have to fix his one regret—the love that got away.
The summer between the end of school and the start of what came next was full of sun, surf, and sex. For Will McLeod, that meant Tom, his first male lover. He knew the romance had an expiration date and would end when Tom joined the Army, but that didn’t stop Will from falling in love.
Tired of being looked down upon for being poor, Will became a lawyer—but not just any lawyer. He litigates for the gods as they gamble with the lives of those desperate enough to make deals. His job is to make sure they don’t slip free. He has more money than he knows what to do with, but he’s fast running out of soul.
Twenty-five years haven’t dimmed the candle Will holds for Tom, and when they meet again, he has a chance to put things right. Back then, Tom wasn’t ready to fight for them. Now the decorated soldier is willing to get his hands dirty, but will he be a match for the forces trying to keep them apart?
REVIEW:
This was a good story, but not exactly how I thought it would turn out. I expected something a bit different. I’m not sure what, but something. Maybe a little more on Lucifer’s part, seeing as he’s known as a trouble maker of sorts. But this one had a bit of a twist. It was the so called ‘angels’ causing trouble this time. Although, they weren’t really angels. Just minions of the gods.
Will has been regretting his job for a while now. Not that he doesn’t want to be a lawyer. But how he went about getting it. He made a deal with a god to get the fortune and notoriety he wanted so he would never be poor again and maybe no one would be ashamed of him again. His only regret in his contract was his ex, Tom. Tom wasn’t out then. Still isn’t. He couldn’t go against what his parents wanted while he was in school. He couldn’t be himself. When he joined the military he came out to the world, to a point. He knew he still had to be careful. But his parents were still a no go. Until Will. Seeing Will again at the reunion was like taking his breath away. But some weird stuff was going on and he was starting to put things together. Problem was, Will couldn’t flat out tell him without getting in major trouble. They had to figure out a way to break the contract. But so far nothing is working. Will knew what he had to do. So when Tom asked for the full details, he told them, knowing what would happen to him. But Lucifer is wanting Will on his team and is going to fight for him and hoping Tom will help. And so now Tom has a decision. Help Will break this and be free, or lose him forever and go back to hiding who he is.
I can totally understand where Will was coming from. Having been homeless at one point and being a very poor single mom, sometimes I wonder if I could sell my soul to make things better. But like Will said. Nothing is ever free. It comes with a price. And every time he was losing a bit of his soul. He wasn’t allowed to compromise or make allowances for special cases. No. His rules were given to him cut and dry. And he hated himself and the job for it. When it came time to go to the reunion, he was hoping again to see Tom. Maybe finally break this contract. But things didn’t turn out the way they were supposed to. The god he served was determined to interfere in order to keep Will, whether he was supposed to or not. So everything was a constant battle. And I don’t know who I felt worse for. Will, because he was so miserable or Tom, because he was just thrust into a world he didn’t know existed. It was a crazy mess.
You guys should read this. It’s a good book. TJ always has some good stuff that is churned out. And I’m glad I got to read it.
