A warm welcome to author Elyse Springer joining us today to talk about new release “SuckerPunch”.
Welcome Elyse 🙂
Social Media in Fiction
Welcome to the blog tour for Suckerpunch, the first book in a new paranormal sports romance series where vampires and other creatures secretly play hockey in the NHL… and fall in love, of course!
Being a fan of hockey can mean spending a lot of time on social media. Twitter, Instagram, even Tumblr… all of these sites are great tools for teams to reach out to their fans, pass along important information, and share highlight clips. But it’s also a way for fans to interact with other fans, and that’s something I really wanted to capture in Suckerpunch.
So throughout the novel you’ll find tweets, interview excerpts, and all kinds of other posts that you might find on your social media feed!
(And if you’re reading on an e-reader, be sure to click on the links for an extra treat…)
Here are a few examples:

The Seattle Cascades are a fictional NHL team, but you can find them on twitter @CascadesNHL, where they highlight team events throughout the book.
Seattle Cascades (@CascadesNHL)
#BreakingNews Goalie Eduard Despres out with upper body injury, estimated 3-6 months. Cascades recall goaltender Alex Fanning from AHL’s Portland Loggers.
Seattle Sports News (@SeattleSportsNews)
Cascades’ Despres (G) out 3-6 months after late-night car accident. Police suspect alcohol may have been involved. More details as we get them.
Interactions with sports media are also found throughout the book, offering an extra perspective on the hockey side of things.
But there’s also a story within a story, following a group of Cascades fans as they celebrate and vent their frustrations along with the wins and losses of their favorite teams.
Mrs. Merkley… a girl can dream! (@MerkleyFan96)
ohmygod the new guy? alex fanning? is *gorgeous*! here’s a pic of him from when he was on the loggers last year. those eyes! pic.twitter.com/zEh3…
Emma (@Cascadiac)
@MerkleyFan96: damnnnnn, he looks like something off a boyband album cover. Are we sure he’s really 22 though? He looks like he’s barely 18.
And of course, you can’t have social media without some fun graphics, like hockey cards and jersey logos!
Social media plays a big role in Suckerpunch, because you can’t have a hockey team without fans, news media, and of course the team itself! I wanted to show that hockey isn’t just a bunch of people skating around and hitting each other… it’s a multi-dimensional sport with loyal followers!

But to hold on to his hopes, he must keep his vampire heritage secret as the sport moves to ban Paranormals. The sexy but infuriating defenseman Sasha Petrov won’t make that easy. The injured goalie was his best friend, and he resents Alex’s presence—maybe even enough to use his bloodline against him.
