Cat is peculiar, she always has been. She grew up talking to the evil three that no one could see, which forced her into years of therapy. Maybe it’s because she’s a creative genius, tapped into the frequency where concept takes form and manifests, either way things got better when she met art gallery owners Teddy and Perry.
Seven years later it feels like all of that is the distant past, but the past is never forgotten, the ghosts of it walk among us and watch us, even as we sleep. He looks so real, is her mind playing tricks on her? He looks as three dimensional as you, as me, except he’s bound to here. Cat can see him, she can’t help but see him, and now she’s witnessed walking through the streets arguing with a new invisible friend.
Are any of these beings truly friends? The past should be forgotten, right? But what if forgetting the past puts us in danger? What Cat is about to do is explosive, it’s dangerous, and she no longer cares who calls her Mad Cat.
REVIEW:
I wasn’t quite sure what to think of this book at first. It was kind of slow to start but once I really got into it, I couldn’t put it down. It’s emotional in a lot of ways. There’s a lot going on. And mostly I feel for Cat.
Cat started seeing ghosts from as early as she can remember, but there were 3 in particular, that were mean and cruel, and had her curling into herself. Her mom had her seeing shrinks and such and they chalked it up to her father having left them. But it wasn’t that. And they didn’t go away for a long time. Then one day they were gone. She dig deeper into her art during all this. Even sketching the 3. When she met Perry and Teddy, the local art gallery owners, Teddy was impressed. And for Teddy, that was huge. Teddy hardly liked anyone. More and more she got to know these men. They were like fathers to her. Encouraging her and being real with her. At least Teddy. And in some crude ways lol. She always had her sketch pad and was drawing. Her paintings and stuff sold quickly for one being so young. But when she met another ghost, things began to change. Franz, a WWII German pilot, crashed on the shore of their town and there was a bomb somewhere buried on that beach. When Franz realized it, he pushed Cat into finding anything they could to help find the bomb before it went off. When she finally started digging, everyone laughed at her and thought she was nuts. Thinking she’s just mourning Teddy dying. Shrinks coming back trying to talk to her. But she’s determined. And when she finds it, it goes off. Thankfully no one is hurt but it’s a shocker. Even more when they find Franz’s plane. But what’s on Cat’s mind now, is Teddy is gone, and the secret he shared with her before he died. Maybe things will be ok after all?
Having people call you Mad Cat and all kinds of names because you see ghosts, is no easy thing to deal with. No one believes you. Everyone thinks you’re nuts. And the ghosts themselves are assholes. At 7, she wasn’t equipped to deal with this kind of stuff. So when she’s older and seeing one again, I can’t blame her for being quiet about it. The only problem is, everyone sees her talking to empty air. So they all think she’s nuts again. Teddy and Perry and her art are what kept her sane. Until the whole bomb thing. That really got people talking. I couldn’t help but feel for her. And having to lose one of her best friends in Teddy, just broke me for her even more. Teddy is so great. He and his partner, Perry, were actors and then opened the gallery. Teddy is ever dramatic. Always cursing and vulgar and crude at times. And allows Cat to be as well. It’s actually quite funny. But when it comes down to brass tacks, he’s the best friend in the world to her. The father she always needed. He and Perry both.
And then all the crap she was dealing with with Franz. That would make any sane person nuts. But he knew what he was talking about. At first, with Cat, it was just that fact that someone could see and talk to him. But the more he remembers where they are, he knows they have to find that bomb. And again. Cat is nuts. Not really but everyone thinks so. So yeah, it’s a tough story for a girl trying to deal. It’s a hard life when no one believes you or thinks you crazy. But Teddy gave her the one secret that made her ok. No matter what anyone else thought.
It’s a good story. It’s got a slow start but once you get into it, it’s really good.
