It’s goalie vs. goalie in this brand-new enemies-to-lovers hockey romance from Avon Gale and Piper Vaughn…
Ryu Mori has had a stellar season as goalie for the Atlanta Venom. So when he’s called into management’s office, he’s expecting to hear he’s the new starting goalie for the team, not that some new guy—an incredibly hot, annoyingly bratty rookie—is here to compete for his spot.
Not everyone gets to play in the best league in the world. Emmitt Armstrong knows that, and he’s not about to waste the opportunity after grinding his way from the bottom to the top. If the Venom is looking for a meek, mild-mannered pushover, they’ve got the wrong guy.
Ryu doesn’t want to admit the other goalie’s smart mouth turns him on. Beating Armstrong at practice feels good, sure, but there are other, more fun ways to shut his rival up.
In this league, it’s winner takes all. But there’s more to life than winning, and if Emmitt and Ryu can get past their egos and competitive natures, they might just discover they work better as partners than they ever imagined possible.
REVIEW:
Woohoo, the Venom are back! This time around, it’s goalie fever, as veteran Mori vies for the coveted starter position with newly called up from the AHL rookie Armstrong. Of course there will be sparks! They are each other’s competition on the team, and while they are opposites in personalities and styles, they find they actually share many similarities as well. When their attraction is realized, they decide to take advantage and carry on with a no-strings, let off steam only sexcapade. And boy are these two hot stuff.
We met Ryu in the previous book centering around teammate Tristan and his sexy professor, Sebastian. While we get to see plenty of them, this could easily be read on its own, though you would definitely be missing out! The season starts out a bit slow as these guys all figure out how to best work together. The team takes a different approach utilizing both goalies in tandem, as opposed to having a dedicated starter/backup, and it ends up working beautifully.
Of course, it is inevitable that feelings start to take hold as the two share their commonalities surrounding their goalieship and family issues. Ryo is Japanese and Emmitt is a black man – both minorities in an almost all white sport, something of which they both try to expand upon. But their competitiveness almost gets in the way of their relationship, and understandably so. The Cup is something all hockey players strive for, and when it looks to be within reach, they must both buckle down, especially if they want to be the one in the net.
Needless to say, this was a quick read with lots of hockey action and plenty of great dialog. The Venom team has some great characters – Morley is a hoot and surely needs to be in the final book! Either way, I’ll be ready to grab it up. I’m happy to report on yet another great hockey story from yet another fabulous writing duo. Can’t wait to see what the next season has in store for us!
