Monthly Guest Post—Andrew Q. Gordon—New New Beginnings.

I’ll be honest, when I finally finished When Heroes Fall, Book 5 of Champion of the Gods, I was looking forward and trying to figure out what’s next. I spent some time working on new MM romance stories under my Andy Gallo penname, but I still hadn’t figured out where to go next. People gave me suggestions, I listened, tried to slot them into what I wanted to try next, and then let it ferment for a time. My expectation was I’d have time to sort it out and make a choice. Then life happened.

Everyone in the world of MM romance is aware that Dreamspinner is having a bit of a rough patch. I won’t comment beyond that because I have no other information that what is being put out by DSP itself. But one thing I can say for sure, the new path DSP mapped for itself doesn’t really fit with my books. And that is not a bad thing, it just is a thing.

That said, Dreamspinner has agreed to give me back all my rights (except for some foreign rights and the audio rights to the audio books that are already out.) When we spoke, I expressed a desire to move my books in a new direction and they agreed they were no longer the right fit for me. As I said, life is happening in a way I didn’t plan.

Which means I’ll need to figure out what to do with my books before I can decide what to do next. I want to be clear, this is not me being upset with DSP. I’m not. They gave me a chance when I didn’t have anyone who knew me as an author. For that I’m grateful to them. I’m simply hoisting my big boy pants up, and finding my new new way forward.

It’s a bit of a scary new world for me. I have a day job, a family, and a thousand stories in my head that want to be written. Now I need to add figuring out self-publishing to my list. That is both daunting and exciting. I now have full control over my author life. For an “A” type litigator like myself that isn’t totally a bad thing. But it will require more time and work. As Al Bundy once said, making hard choices is what being an adult is all about.

Some days I could do without all the adulting I have to do.

One last item. If you’ve been meaning to get my books, but haven’t. Now would be the time. I don’t know how long it will take me to get everything settled, but it won’t be right away.

~Enjoy the journey.

Andrew Q. Gordon wrote his first story back when yellow legal pads, ball point pens were common and a Smith Corona correctable typewriter was considered high tech. Adapting with technology, he now takes his MacBook somewhere quiet when he wants to write.

Since devouring The Lord of the Rings as a preteen, he has been a fan of all things fantastical. His imagination has helped him create works of high fantasy, paranormal thrills and touch of the futuristic. He also writes the occasional contemporary story.

He currently lives in the Washington, D.C. area with his husband of twenty-four years. Together they are raising their daughter and three dogs. Andrew tries to squeeze writing time in around his most important jobs, being husband and ‘Papa.’ Along with teaching how to kick a soccer ball or ride a scooter, he has become fluent in cartoon characters and children’s books.
