I gave the rumor mill fodder for a lifetime the day I walked away from a lucrative music career without explanation.
People can talk all they like; my record stores are my lifeblood now, and I’m devoted solely to keeping them afloat in the digital age. There’s just one little thing distracting me: an earth-dwelling sunbeam named Owen Harper. I don’t know what I was thinking when I hired him. In fact, maybe I wasn’t thinking at all.
Quirky and excitable, he’s a walking, talking danger to fragile objects. His energy alone could power a small country. That’s never been my style. Hell, I was probably cutting my first album while he was cutting teeth. He wants a music career, and I’m done with all that. We couldn’t be on more opposite paths.
He’s other things, too, though. Things that keep me up late at night. Things that make me forget I’m supposed to be simplifying.
And damn does he love to push my buttons.
Now I’m struggling to resist his pull, drowning in the memory of his skin under my hands, his mouth on mine. His laugh.
When a long shadow from my past comes calling with an offer I’d be stupid to refuse, there’s more on the line than the survival of the shops I’ve dedicated the last fifteen years of my life to.
Because those fragile objects I mentioned earlier? One of them might well be my heart.
Resonance is the second book in the Rhythm of Love series but can be read on its own. It’s a steamy slow burn bisexual age-gap, boss/employee romance with lots of banter and two obstinate heroes who really, really don’t want to want the very thing they both need.
REVIEW:
There’s just something about Dan that got to me right away. I could almost hear his voice in my head, with a slow, smoky-sweet drawl that would melt your insides when he sang. His whole attitude got me right in the heart. He’s a man who didn’t know what he was looking for it until he found it in Owen.
Owen Harper is like a puppy, cute and adorable and totally unaware of the effect he’s having on Dan. Until he isn’t and takes advantage of it whenever he can. In the sweetest, sexiest way possible.
Harper’s lack of confidence triggers something protective in Dan and that’s a combination I can’t resist. We also meet some interesting people along the way. Their friend and co-worker Ru is a great character and his dedication to both men won my heart. Also, I found Dan’s brother intriguing. I hope there’s going to be a story about him coming from this author.
I didn’t read the first book in this series but I will soon because I really love this author’s way of writing and the tone of their “voice”. This book is slow going and it’s perfect that way. I love the way the anticipation builds as Owen and Dan circle around each other. The main source of angst in this story is their own insecurities and lack of communication skills. Both men are so convinced that they are the last thing the other guy wants or needs, that it takes an almost-tragedy to get them to really see what’s important.
I’m not usually a big fan of the first person POV but it worked well here, letting us get inside the characters heads in alternating chapters so we can see the goings-on from both sides of the situation. Sometimes the head hop can get confusing but this author did a great job of making sure we knew who’s eyes we were looking at things from.
All in all, this is a great story, with an interesting premise and it’s been very well written. Neve Wilder is a new-to-me author but I will definitely be looking for more wonderful stories to come from them!
