BLURB:
At 47, Oren Walker isn’t looking for love. When he knocks on Pete Higgins’ door, all he wants is to thank him for helping his mom after she broke her femur. He never expected that one look at the man would make his knees weak and heart flutter.
Pete is happy, albeit a bit lonely, after divorcing his wife of twenty years and isn’t looking to replace her. But when Oren shows up, all grateful and handsome and in that fancy suit, the longing for the deep connection of a relationship flares up inside him.
As the leaves turn yellow, Oren and Pete spend a lot of time in honest conversations. Their attraction grows. Will the two men recognize the promise of new beginnings, and take the chance to find the happiness they both deserve?
REVIEW:
Oren is a very busy successful middle-aged guy who has definitely not made relationships a priority. He’s devoted to his mother, but since his father has passed away a few years before, he’s been definitely thinking about what he wants his life to be like in the future. He works hard, travels and lot and keeps tabs on his mother.
Recently Oren’s mother has had an accident and her neighbor thankfully has come to the rescue. But when Oren reaches out to thank Pete for his kindness, he’s surprised by the attraction and his desire to get to know Pete better. Despite seeing a picture of Pete’s beautiful family, he can’t help the pangs of want for a relationship.
Pete, for his part is surprised by the attraction that he feels for Oren. Pete makes sure that the next time he sees Oren, he shares his marital status, his bisexual orientation and his love of his children. They share some nice moments and friendship, but both feel that there could be more and they are missing something in their lives. They agree to see where things go. As they grow closer and Oren feels so much more peaceful in Pete’s presence, they realize that they might have the chance at something real and lasting.
This is the third story by Nell Iris that I’ve read. She has a wonderful way with a short story. So much emotion packed into a small word count. Although this story takes place over the beginning of this relationship, we get a good sense of both men. The supporting characters of Pete’s family and Oren’s mom also provide insight into each man and his life before they meet. The story provides a beautiful relationship that grows from true friendship, companionship, attraction and affection. These men have lived a bit and are looking for that soft place to fall. There is comfort and support and love in abundance in this story. Definitely recommended for those who love short stories. The atmosphere and the characters are just spot on.
