Sometimes getting everything you’re dreaming of means letting go of what you think you want.
There is nothing special about Kyle McMillan. The forty-year-old construction manager for a high-end home builder is pursuing a lifelong goal of obtaining a college degree when his average, uneventful life literally collides with Lucas Cass. When Lucas opens the door for a spontaneous sexual encounter, Kyle walks through it. Soon, the hottest, most instinctive thing Kyle has ever done turns upside-down. Lucas isn’t only out of Kyle’s league and seventeen years younger, but he’s also a gay porn star.
Lucas is so used to being reduced to a single body part that he’s not sure how to react to Kyle’s interest then rejection. He loves what he does and the company he works for, but Kyle is exactly what he’s always wanted. He’s not walking away without taking another shot. After finding themselves in the same summer class, the two put off the discussion of Lucas’ porn career and agree to date casually. Lucas is determined to show Kyle how fun kinky sex is and how amazing they can be together.
When the road gets rocky, Kyle must finally deal with Lucas’ job and his own sexual hang-ups or risk hitting a dead end. But if they can negotiate a compromise, they might just end up someplace extraordinary.
REVIEW:
Kyle meets Lucas when he’s a returning student to university. Their “running into each other” almost leads to sex, but Kyle walks away. Lucas is intrigued. So he pursues Kyle. Kyle cannot figure out for the life of him why this young very hot guy would be pursuing him. But that’s exactly what he does. When Lucas invites Kyle over, things are going great until they get to the subject of porn and Kyle is not a fan. Lucas is sad, because he really likes Kyle, but he also loves his job as a gay porn star.
When Kyle takes a summer class, there is Lucas. Lucas is still interested and they agree to “casually date” for the duration of the class. But things heat up pretty quickly – and they agree not to talk about Lucas’s job. But then Lucas’s job becomes pertinent to their class projects. So Kyle agrees to meet Lucas’s bosses and coworkers in that context. He’s surprised by what he finds. Lucas also explains the reasons that he got into porn and why he continues to do it – and it’s not at all what Kyle expected. Kyle also meets Lucas’s parents and he puts together another piece of the puzzle.
Along the way, there are times when Lucas’s job impacts their relationship as Lucas is filming away in Las Vegas and Kyle is working. During that time, Kyle realizes just how deep he is in with Lucas. Summer is coming to an end and neither of them wants this to end. However, there is a big blow up and some conflict with Kyle’s friends and family over Lucas’s job and their assumptions about him. Kyle has to decide if he’s going to be able to put aside his reservations and prejudices about Lucas’s job and their age difference and his own self-perception and self-esteem issues to go for the best thing he’s ever had.
This is the first book I’ve read by this author. Normally I’m not a huge fan of First Person POV, but surprisingly I really enjoyed this story told from Kyle’s perspective. He had a lot of issues and we get to really see him work through them. Lucas is adorable and he gives us a great example of how and why someone would decide to be in porn. We see the very real attitudes of others towards those in the sex work industry and how it impacts their relationships. I really liked the way the author motivated Lucas’s decisions on work and how it was wrapped up in him accepting himself in many ways. The author made clear distinction between the work aspect of Lucas’s job and his relationship and sex life with Kyle. The secondary characters – particularly their families and Kyle’s friends and even an ex, play and integral role in Kyle getting out of his head and following his heart. Kyle has to work really hard to get to the place where he and Lucas can have a happily ever after. I absolutely loved the ending as well. Definitely recommended and I’ll be looking for more stories from this author.
