Reading his future in a glass of sweet tea.
The youngest son of one of America’s richest families, Remy Merced is so busy trying to save his family company from collapse, he’s never taken time to figure out if he’s gay, much less if he’s happy. Then his meddling mama hires him an assistant who’s everything Remy thinks he doesn’t want. Cute Harper Treadwell, from rural Arkansas, is a brilliant business prodigy… and openly gay. His wit and charm could confirm Remy’s suspicions about his own sexuality almost instantly—if they weren’t both already partnered.
When Remy’s girlfriend and Harper’s boyfriend get a little too friendly, Remy finds that the path to happiness requires a long drive in an old Prius, a growing appreciation for small towns, and a whole lot of sweet tea. But before they can forge a future—they have to let go of the past.
REVIEW:
Remy Merced is bone tired. Between the stress of his job, the pressure to not let his family down and his fizzling relationship with his girlfriend, he just can’t catch a break. His mother decides he needs some help, so she hires her friend from Arkansas’s son to be his assistant. But Remy doesn’t want an assistant – even if it is the undeniably adorable Harper Treadwell. Harper may be brilliant, but Remy is none too happy that his mother has gone behind his back.
But when Remy cannot see the forest for the trees, he finally figures out that maybe he needs a fresh perspective and set of eyes on his problems. His family grocery store empire is suffering and he can’t find the right ingredients to make online shopping viable. Even the great Amazon is struggling with it and he can’t perfect the recipe. But with Harper’s help, he may have an idea as to the secret sauce that might make it work. In the meantime, Harper’s ex seems to be WAY too interested in what’s going on with his company.
Remy also can’t seem to ignore the fact that he’s attracted to Harper, and he’s not sure what that means. Turns out he’s messed around with guys before, but knowing how conservative the customers and board of directors might be about such, he really doesn’t want to make waves. Even though he knows he’s not in love with Felicity, his workaholic girlfriend, nor is she in love with him, it’s been convenient and he’s not sure what he should to about it. When Harper discovers that he’s been a pawn in some machinations that are ill-intended to Remy and his family, and he subsequently misinterprets another situation with Remy, he takes off for Arkansas. Remy can’t believe that Harper is gone and he’s determined to get him back. And maybe he can solve his business problems too!
I am a huge fan of this series. All the romances are sweet and satisfying and I think this one might be my favorite. Tara Lain’s writing always leaves me with a smile on my face and a big fat happy ending. Remy grows from workaholic manchild ignoring his own desires to a happy, successful, satisfied adult. Harper learns to stand up for himself and maybe give more credit to his town and friends than he did in the past. He opens himself up to honesty with his community and they embrace him even more! The lovely southernisms and charm of the whole Merced clan as well as Harper’s mother and the townsfolk of Windy Pines, Arkansas, contribute to the beautiful setting and feel of this book. Honestly, I just really loved it. My only complaint is that that I wish we got even more of Remy and Harper! They are completely adorable and made for each other!
