Damian Nettoyer is the Empire’s go-to gun. He kills whoever they want him to kill. In exchange, he and his rag-tag gang of crooks get to live, and Damian’s psychokinetic partner and lover, Aris, isn’t issued a one-way ticket to an Empire-sanctioned lobotomy.
Then Damian’s latest mark, a suave revolutionary named Raeyn, kicks his ass and demands his help. The first item on the new agenda: take out Damian’s old boss—or Raeyn will take out Damian’s crew.
To protect his friends and save his own skin, Damian teams up with Raeyn to make his revolution work. As the revolution gains traction, Damian gets way too close to Raeyn, torn between the need to shoot him one moment and kiss him the next. But Aris slips further away from Damian, and as Aris’ control over his powers crumbles, the Watch catches on.
With the Empire, Damian had two policies: shoot first and don’t ask questions. But to save the guy he loves, he’ll set the world on fire.
REVIEW:
This was a hell of a book. A great sci-fi action story. Damian couldn’t seem to catch a break in this story no matter what he did. And I couldn’t put the book down to see how he would get through the next set of trials that were thrown against him.
Damian has been asked to do a job. He’s kind of like the CIA. He works for this particular government but if he’s caught, they don’t know him kind of thing. He’s been sent to take out someone, only the someone turns it around on him. Raeyn, who Damian thought was the mark’s bodyguard, caught him and brought him in to speak. He was offered triple to take out the competition. Damian agrees, but he doesn’t realize how deep into stuff he really is. It started with his shadow group. Like orphans, they became a family. And he did all he could to protect Aris. Who was a Voyant (magician). But Aris is getting stronger and Damian was almost in danger a few times with him. Even though they were lovers. But things are starting to unravel and a crapload of secrets are being revealed. Most of them leading back to Aris and Raeyn. And when Damian gets told the connection, he’s not a happy camper. Because by now, Aris seems to be caught up in the president’s grasp, Raeyn has lied and betrayed him, along with one of the shadows and he has now discovered a secret about himself. It’s all too much and he is tired of being killed to be brought back, only to be used again. Maybe this time, with this mission, it will finally be over.
Man, that boy couldn’t catch a break. Plus being pulled in different directions because of his relationship with Aris and now Raeyn. The government people are using him like crazy. Each with their own agenda and each with blackmail material to use against him or someone he cares for. The worst part about the whole thing was finding out about Aris and Raeyn’s past and family and what the president was and what he was doing. It was a complete mess. And every time you turned around, he was getting beat up or shot or something. He couldn’t win. He actually wished one of these times he could just die for real and be done with it. But yeah, they wouldn’t give him that one either.
And I still don’t quite know what to think about Aris and Raeyn. You have to read to find out their connection and what’s going on, but it’s a doozy.
It’s a good story. Really good. I just hope if Damian’s in the next book, he gets a bit of a break this time lol. Poor guy.
