I’ve never been a fan of summer. Even summer vacation couldn’t make me love summer more than the other three seasons. It’s the heat. I’m like the Wicked Witch, I melt.
Adulting didn’t make it better. Not only don’t we get ten weeks off from work, we still have to wear work appropriate clothing. No shorts and t-shirts. And with global warming being a real thing, it’s getting a lot worse wearing a suit and tie in the hot months.
If those weren’t reason enough, there is back to school. Parents all over rejoice as their children return to school for another year. We miss them when summer vacation ends – we like spending time with them – but we also like getting back to our routine. How many times do we make allowances by saying, “it’s summer vacation?”
Routines are popular because they work – at least for most people. And ‘lil q going back to school allows our family to get back to ours. That’s a good thing in general, but especially for me as a writer.
As someone with a full-time job who also tries to write, blocking out ‘authoring’ time is important. My goals get set by figuring I can write/format/market this many hours a week. Sure we never keep 100% to a schedule. Time set aside for one thing gets co-opted for something else. But without fail, I am far more productive with a schedule, than without. Just having that time blocked out helps with saying no, I can’t do such-and-such right now.
So, goodbye to summer and its heat and disruptions. I’ll miss my extra time with ‘lil q, but I’ll be happy to have my routine back. Maybe now I’ll finish a few stories before the end of the year.
Andrew Q. Gordon wrote his first story back when yellow legal pads, ball point pens were common and a Smith Corona correctable typewriter was considered high tech. Adapting with technology, he now takes his MacBook somewhere quiet when he wants to write.
Since devouring The Lord of the Rings as a preteen, he has been a fan of all things fantastical. His imagination has helped him create works of high fantasy, paranormal thrills and touch of the futuristic. He also writes the occasional contemporary story.
He currently lives in the Washington, D.C. area with his husband of twenty-four years. Together they are raising their daughter and three dogs. Andrew tries to squeeze writing time in around his most important jobs, being husband and ‘Papa.’ Along with teaching how to kick a soccer ball or ride a scooter, he has become fluent in cartoon characters and children’s books.
