BLURB:
If you’re going to fly into the path of an oncoming hurricane, there’s only one man you want as Captain: ex-Air Force pilot, Rook Terzi. But why would you do ever do such a thing in the first place? This definitely isn’t the smartest decision Rook has ever made, as evidenced by an abrupt landing on the wrong side of Coxa de Peru, but being marooned isn’t all bad. In fact, it would be almost paradise if it weren’t for one particular passenger: YouTube personality and alpha-wannabe, Bryce Norris.
Bryce figures he’s the best choice to take charge of this group of survivors. He’s a paid adventurer, after all. Sure, his production manager usually handles the details, but Bryce does his own stunts, and he’s ready to sacrifice his body in any way necessary. Too bad no one’s asking him to play hero, because he’s well-equipped for the job.
When a crew member’s declining health means they can’t wait for rescue any longer, Bryce and Rook need to stop fighting for dominance and start cooperating on a jungle trek towards civilization. Can their rivalry turn to passion beneath a tropical moon?
Content warning: the author knows nothing about flying a plane except what you learn by sitting in one and has made up her own model of aircraft. If you have any aviation expertise, you’ll probably find this book supremely annoying. Otherwise, suspend your disbelief, buckle in, and let’s take off on what’s sure to be a wild ride.
REVIEW:
For the most part, I liked this book. A plane crash in the middle of a hurricane and people trying to survive. Especially considering the different personalities. But one personality in particular got on my nerves this whole book. I know he was written to be that and he actually, underneath that cocky attitude, was smart and could be counted on. But Bryce just took things too far sometimes and it was hard for me to read at points because of it.
Rook, being an experienced pilot, figured he’d be able to get his passengers in and out before the hurricane got any worse. And he would have been right had the winds not shifted. But they did and Rook had no choice. He had to land and in ended up being in the middle of the woods. The crash split the plane in half, and caused some injuries. None were too bad except for the flight attendant, and that was because of a passenger who was being an ass. Now they are all trying to weather out the hurricane the best they can and take care of each other hoping soon they get rescued. But with no cell service, no way to call. Eventually they remember there were emergency supplies on the back half of the plane that end up helping a lot, but with Kris’s, the flight attendant’s, health getting worse, they have no choice but to try to go for help. Bryce tried at one point but was outvoted, everyone thinking he’s just too cocky and too much. But he puts his foot down to go to save Kris. With he and Rook going together, they do all the can to get there, and forming a bond even more. But with all the destruction to this little island, they realize they may not make it or in time.
Being in a crisis is always tough, especially when it’s bad. You never know what kind of personalities you are going to get. Who’s going to help or not. If things are going to be hostile or not. And with this ragtag group, it was definitely a mesh of differences. And they all came out. It was tense, high strung and sometimes got too much. But when it counted, the majority of them, including Bryce, jumped in and did what needed to be done. Even if it was something dangerous. They tried to do all they could to survive. That’s what made it interesting for me.
And although the story was mainly about the crash and the survivors, I do have to say, in times of crises like that, let us not forget those who are in real need. And the survivors. Hell, we are still trying to recover in places here years later.
