Never fall for a mark. Mission fail.
Christopher Perri—a.k.a. Dante Perry—infiltrated the Madigan organization with one goal: vengeance for his murdered partner. Falling for the assassin at the head of the table wasn’t part of the plan, but Hawes Madigan is not the cold, untouchable Prince of Killers Chris expected. Everything about the newly crowned king is hot, and every inch of him eminently touchable…and off-limits once Chris’s cover is blown.
Exposure couldn’t come at a worse time. Hawes’s throne is threatened, and Chris suspects the same person who killed his partner is behind the coup. Working with Hawes benefits them both, but Chris’s employer has other ideas. Dismantling criminal organizations is what Chris does best, and his boss expects the King Slayer to deliver.
But Hawes is taking the Madigans in a new direction, one Chris can get behind, and the two men form a shaky alliance strengthened by the irresistible attraction between them…until Chris learns who killed his partner. Once he knows the truth, the King Slayer is unleashed, and Chris will stop at nothing to destroy those who betrayed him, including the king who stole his heart.
REVIEW:
This series grabbed me from the get go, and I was relieved we didn’t have to wait too long for the continuation. I was even more relieved to find this installment just as good, if not better than the first. There is a lot going on with Chris sticking to his main goal of trying to find out what happened to his partner, Izzy – to take down the responsible party and finally get justice for her death.
More pieces to the puzzle are found here and there, but just as many new ones are scattered about to throw everyone in doubt. There is the constant push and pull of who is playing who, and who can be trusted. Unfortunately, or fortunately, Hawes is right smack in the middle of all things – good and bad – giving Chris glimmers of hope yet ripping them away just as quickly. These two have been through so much, have carried so much guilt and grief around for so many years, coupled with the added familial responsibilities, and it feels as though they are each one step away from total breakdown.
When these two are together and in trusting mode (as much as either can be), they are scorching hot. Unfortunately, it is slowly becoming clearer that they are all pawns being moved around and manipulated, and it will take them working together, truly trusting each other, to get the answers they need and to come out the other side intact, alive and with enough left to come together at the end. Ms. Reyne does a fabulous job of keeping everyone on their toes, but the second you let your guard down, more crumbs, more acts of betrayal, good guys turning bad, bad turning good – it’s a bit of a wild ride that had me turning pages eager to get to the end. I couldn’t get there fast enough, even though I knew we would, once again, be left hanging and counting the days until we get what I’m expecting to be an exciting conclusion.
I love the writing style, the tone of the characters, the dialog and banter, and after all these guys are put through, I’m seriously hoping to see them finding some peace at the end of it all. There are a lot of details to still be revealed, and though I have my suspicions, I can’t wait to see how it all plays out. Highly recommend!
