BLURB:
During the 17th century, the Holy Church trained and employed Slayers to eliminate preternaturals. They were often provided with an intermediary who served as a combination of servant and sparring partner.
Slayer Alessandro and his lover, José, have devoted over two decades to the cause. During that time, Alessandro has learned that most non-humans just want to be left alone to live in peace—something he dreams of himself.
When a preternatural threat arises close to home, something previously unheard of, Alessandro decides this mission will be his last.
Unfortunately for Alessandro, someone else has the same idea.
REVIEW:
Very, very good start to this series. I am loving this. Slayer and preters. Good vs evil. And of course, you can’t have that without some greedy butthead behind the scenes trying to ruin everything or take something doesn’t belong to them.
Alessandro is a well known Slayer. Many fear him when they see him. But if people really knew him, they might not be quite as fearful. Alessandro is tired of this life. Tired of being told to kill people because they’re different, when most often all they want is to live their lives in peace and to be left alone. And Alessandro does. He’s let more go on with their lives then he should, and that alone could cost him everything. But he has to do what’s right. And he’s tired of the game, the lies, the rich thinking they can get away with everything. All he wants now is to retire and live in peace with his beloved José. But a few others have their eyes on José as well. As Alessandro is trying to battle the outbreak of zombies coming from out of nowhere, he is discovering there’s more to this story. And when they take his beloved José, he will die freeing the man he loves. And die may just be what’s in order when he sees what he’s really up against.
Like any soldier, there comes a time when enough is enough. Unfortunately, nowadays, you’re not allowed to leave til after a certain time. In those days as well. It’s not a ‘law’ or whatever the right word then as it is not, but then it was always the threat of things. Do this or we’ll take this. Do this or we could ruin your good name. etc, etc. Alessandro felt trapped, especially when the Bishop seemed in no hurry to let him want to retire. And I felt for him and José. Because when Alessandro starts hearing rumors why, it angered him and he knew things were going to get bad. So not fair. Thankfully, by saving a young man in the forest, Alessandro and José both had no idea how it would change and affect their lives. And I love how it does.
A great start to this series and I can’t wait to read the rest and see where this leads.
