a long list of things I don’t handle well:
Change.
Relationships.
Breakups.
But there’s one person above everything else I can’t seem to get a handle on.
𝘉𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘺 𝘞𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦.
In short, he’s perfect. The reality, he scares me.
He’s the opposite of what I usually go for. He’s bigger. Intimidating. He reminds me of someone I’d rather forget.
When I need to find a new place to live, Brody offers me his spare room, but I have no plans on taking him up on the offer. He doesn’t know what happened to me five years ago, and I want to keep it that way.
But with limited options, I find myself outside his apartment holding a full moving box and wondering: How can I do this without exposing the darkest part of my past?
REVIEW:
Ok so if you’ve read book one, you know a lot about Anders and Law and their pasts. If you haven’t read book one, you need to. These need to be in order. Also, in reading book one, you know there are major triggers. Well, you get them full force in this book. Because half of this book is from Anders perspective. His fears, anxiety panic attacks. Everything. And it’s not always pretty. So, if book one triggered you in any way, be careful with this one.
Of course, reading book one, I kind of knew what to look for going into this one. There were quite a few details in book one, so it was a start. But actually seeing Anders go through what he does, is so much more heart wrenching. Because you actually see it. You feel what he feels, see what he sees, and hold your breath hoping he can get through it.
Anders has been fighting his attraction to Brody because he reminded Anders so much of his ex. But how do you tell someone that when you can’t talk about it yourself? When he agrees to be Brody’s roommate because he needed a place to live, it was hard. He wanted to go with his brother, but knew his brother needed to live his new life with Reed. His attraction to Brody just made everything harder. He’s always jumpy and can’t relax. But one smoldering kiss starts to change things. Especially when a nightmare has Brody breaking down Anders door and things ensue. It’s a constant back and forth. One step forward, two steps back. Until they start to learn each other. But Anders seeing his ex’s lawyer, who is Brody’s father, brings back too much and Anders runs. Hard. And there may be no coming back from this. Brody is trying so hard to be patient, but all he wants is his friend and lover.
It’s so hard in situations like this. Because in the end, both people become, not victims, but troubled? Obviously, there is a victim but the partner goes through just as much because they see what is happening to their partner and they feel helpless. Then guilty, wondering if it was something they’ve done to trigger the response. Then of course, the actual victim going through all the trauma over and over. It’s a never ending cycle, that requires a lot of soft stepping. And even then sometimes it doesn’t work. So although I feel so bad for Anders and Law for what they’ve been through, I can’t help but feel for Brody as well. It’s so complicated. But….if things progress, the end results are often so worth it. Because the trust and love you get from the victim, or Anders in this case, means more than life itself. Because the journey they went through to get to that point was huge.
It’s a hard read. Being a victim is never an easy read. But the rewards are worth it. It’s a damn good book.
