Gabriel has been gone longer than predicted, and Evander is growing increasingly worried each day that passes without his return. Confounded by their leaders’ lack of answers, Evander and the team begin to fear the worst.
In the midst of fruitlessly searching Miami for clues to the Daemon Abaddon’s whereabouts, Evander begins to have disturbingly vivid dreams. With a little help from a newly-returned and empty-handed Michael and Barabbas, Evander discovers Gabriel has been calling out for help across their nascent bond. With a little backup from an unlikely source, they set off to rescue Gabriel from the depths of the Underworld.
Gabriel is old friends with torture, and his captors haven’t been gentle. Despite growing weaker every day, Gabriel resolves to survive long enough for rescue, or to die fighting, until a Dark Seer begins to dredge up the terror of Gabriel’s horrific childhood, threatening to destroy his mind and soul. Nearing the end, Gabriel manages a last-ditch effort to contact help, reaching out to Evander in his dreams.
Against all odds, Evander and the team fight through the Underworld to reach Gabriel and come face to face with mortality. Sacrifices made for the bonds of brotherhood nearly break them, and Gabriel learns the hard way that embracing the darkness while fighting for the light may be the only way to survive.
From the underbelly of Reno to the glitz and glam of Vegas, Gabriel, Evander, and the men they call family will be tested, and the final confrontation with Gabriel’s maker may be the end of everything they hold dear.
They joined the fringes of the crowd around the practitioner in time to hear his spiel. “Step right up, join the show. Don’t be afraid, I’m Daniel, and I’m here to amaze you, mystify you, and blow your minds. Hold on to your wallets and watches, I’m not scamming you for your money. I’m going to make you beg me to take it.” Daniel looked out at the audience and winked.
For such a gawky little shit, he was sure cocky. Gabriel grinned to himself, remembering when he’d been the same, then frowned when he thought about why. Observing Daniel closely, he could see that for all his bravado, his smiles never reached his eyes, and the passion for his craft just wasn’t there.
As he called for a volunteer from the audience, it looked like Daniel was moving on from the theatrics to the meat of his show. Gabriel met Nico’s eyes and saw he had the same fear as Gabriel. This boy had darkness in his aura and was preparing to cast on a human subject. Gabriel gestured to Delsin to move, and they placed themselves closer to Daniel so they could intervene if necessary.
The act had the potential to go very badly.
All three of them reacted to the feeling of Daniel pulling on his magics, the sensation cold, swirling around their ankles then crawling up their legs, past their waists to wrap around their necks, momentarily stealing their breath. Gabriel grit his teeth, his jaw clenched so tight he was afraid it would break. Breath sawing in and out of his lungs, Gabriel struggled for control. It would not be a good time to panic or pass out and draw unnecessary attention to them all. Sweat beaded on his brow, rolling down one of his temples, skimming his jaw only to run down his neck and pool in the indentation in the center of his collarbone.
