It’s all fun and games until somebody falls in love.
Chase has just arrived at a much anticipated leather convention, and he’s about to lose his mind. Not only is his ex attending, but Chase is also rooming with Derek, a submissive he’s been dying to top. Although Derek is in search of a Dom, he made it painfully clear when the two of them hooked up for a very hot—but very vanilla—night just before the convention that he wasn’t interested in submitting to Chase.
Derek isn’t stupid. No matter how desperate he is to submit to Chase, he wants no part of a rebound relationship. As long as Chase is still pining after the sub who broke his heart a few months ago, Derek’s keeping him at arm’s length. Besides, there’s another Dom at this convention, the gorgeous Master Raul, who Derek is determined to attract.
But when Chase and Derek are confronted with all their kinks, from ropes to leather, bondage to flogging—not to mention each other—they can only ignore their mutual attraction for so long.
REVIEW:
Chase and Derek are friends attending a leather convention. They’ve been friends for year from their home dungeon. Derek is a sub who has been one to play the field during all that time while Chase is a Dom who was in a relationship with his sub Ian for a couple of years – but that has recently ended badly. Chase is not in a great place still post the breakup and he’s also always carried a bit of a torch for Derek. The night before they leave for the convention, Chase and Derek have sex – of the very vanilla variety. This throws Chase off entirely and he’s not at all sure what that means or doesn’t mean. But given the recent breakup, his confidence isn’t exactly at a high point.
The convention gets off to an OK start, although Ian, Chase’s ex is there and seems to want to talk to Chase. Derek never liked Ian and he’s pretty pissed off at what he did to Chase – the way he ended things was not cool in Derek’s book. Derek seems to also be carrying a bit of a torch for Chase as well. But he is grateful for their friendship and in some ways they get closer during the convention. Derek is comfortable with Chase and when he agrees to do some scenes, he looks to Chase to be there for him in case anything goes wrong.
Also along the way, however, they each battle their feelings and try to keep a lid on their attractions and desires with each other. They are happy to play in other scenes, but they have a good deal of difficulty communicating with each other honestly. There are several cases of miscommunication, omitting to tell one another about conversations and misreading of situations. There is a lot of back and forth, will they or won’t they and hemming and hawing about the state of their friendship. When they decide to get real though, they just might be able to have something more than just friendship.
The saying “the truth shall set you free” really comes to mind for these two. I am not a big fan of a lot of “head talk” of characters. In this story, there is a LOT of internal conversation from both characters. I have to give the narrator, Michael Ferraiuolo (who is absolutely one of my all-time favorites) kudos for doing his best to let us know when a comment is “head talk” as opposed to part of the actual conversation. And even then, there were a few times I wasn’t actually sure. Also, just to be transparent, there are quite a few sex scenes in this story – which I think isn’t unexpected in a story about a kink convention. I really liked the supporting characters – Master Raul, another D/s couple that Derek plays with, and even Ian. Once again, the narration was superb and I never wondered who was speaking. While not one of my favorite LA Witt stories, I think the narration in particular make this a worthwhile listen for those who are fans of BDSM stories, Ms. Witt or Mr. Ferraiuolo.
