BLURB:
A case of mistaken identity could lead to love for an aloof starship captain and a brilliant if underappreciated mechanic from the sticks—if they can survive the dangerous mission assigned to them.
Ginnovi Oshwald just needs someone to give him a chance. He can keep anything running, despite the “spark” his body produces that sometimes wreaks havoc with electronics. Gin gets his chance when Captain Lian Hartford comes to Tallahassee in search of a mechanic. The trouble is, he’s looking for Gin’s sister. But since he only has a name to go by, Gin tells a little white lie. What could go wrong?
Lian loves his ship and his work as a diplomat but has difficulty connecting with others—only partly because of his mixed human and alien heritage. Something about the eccentric mechanic intrigues him, though, and their easy friendship could become more… if they live long enough to broker peace between humanity and a hostile race while pacifying a crew that thinks Gin belongs in prison.
REVIEW:
I’m pretty sure this is my first book by this author, not 100% , but pretty sure, and it wasn’t bad at all. I think my only thing is I felt the end ended abruptly. And some parts, just for me, were a little lagging. Like a lull, but other than that I was pretty happy with it.
Gin is so tired of being out down by his sister. He’s just as good if not better at mechanics than she is, but she thinks she’s better. And now it’s worse. She’s firing him for one mistake. Granted a big one, but he was so flustered he forgot to ground himself with his spark and his spark set off an explosion.
So when Captain Lian came looking for her to hire her, he pretended to be her and ran. Eventually he was found out, especially after having to see the ship’s doctor. He was all set to go to jail, but Lian gave him a chance. He saw how good Gin really was, and when they discovered what he really was and why he had a spark, everything clicked. Plus the more Lian got to know Gin, the more he liked him. But with all the war stuff and trying to keep the peace, it’s taking a toll. The minute Lian steps off the ship to help along peace treaties, Gin was jailed. But Lian can’t even go help him because as soon as he reboards with his passengers, the rebels try to kill them. Now it’s a matter of trying to save everyone and getting Gin. But Lian doesn’t know if it will be enough or in time.
I so get how Gin felt. I got put down my whole life until I started fighting back. Sometimes I just wish Gin would punch his sister in the mouth, but ah well. I sound so violent sometimes lol. Eek. But when he took on her identity, I didn’t blame him a bit. Finally, he could possibly be free and do what he knows he’s good at. If he doesn’t get caught. He just wants so much to prove he can do it. That he’s not incompetent.
Which is why I love Lian. Even when he found out who Gin really was, he gave him that chance anyway. Gin was already proving how capable he is. His files show he’s even better than his sister. And he did everything he could to let Gin keep proving himself. He encouraged him and praised him. Which made all the difference.
It’s a good sci-fi. I still don’t like the way it ended but overall, I think it’s a good book.
