Alpha Declan requests his services in creating an identity for a rescued human whore. What Leo finds when he gets there is a scared young human who is completely overwhelmed by his new reality. Unfortunately, trouble follows. Can Leo use his quick wit swiftly enough to save not only Jerry but his own future as well?
REVIEW:
Note: While this is Book 47 in this series, it can be read as a standalone, although I recommend having read at least Book 6 – Goading the Enforcer to get background on Jared 😊
Jerry is a human who has been basically held captive as a prostitute by a nasty group for a number of years. When this group kidnaps some of the Stone Ridge pack, Alpha Declan and other go to get them back – but there is some collateral fallout with Jerry seeing Leo’s cousin shift during the retrieval. So not only is he being rescued from a gang of thugs, but he now knows that shifters exist. He’s obviously not comfortable with the situation at all. Then Leo shows up to help him with a new identity, Jerry feels much more comfortable. After years of being abused by johns, he’s not even sure he can be attracted to anyone, but he feels safe with Leo.
Leo has been bemoaning the fact that everyone else is finding their mate, but after nearly 200 years, he’s starting to get impatient. Then he meets Jerry and is hit with the realization that maybe Fate was listening because Jerry is definitely his mate 😉 But he’s between a rock and a hard place because Jerry’s already got a lot on his plate what with deciding who he wants to be and what he wants to do and where he wants to go. Leo doesn’t want to pressure him, but he does want to make a life with him and also keep him safe.
Trouble seems to follow Jerry though – after he’s been rescued and again when Leo is trying to make sure that he’s in a safe location with the rest of the pack follows up on the gang responsible for Jerry’s plight and the kidnapping of the other pack members. Leo and his family are willing to do whatever is necessary to keep Jerry safe and to give him peace of mind as well. And there just might be a new life that Jerry can see him self both wanting and getting. Of course, Jared features in all this as well.
For those of you not familiar with this series, there is a formula that goes shifter and mate meet, something happens to one or the other – either because they are a shifter and somebody’s after them – or they are human and somebody’s after them. The pack or other friends of the pack then help to eradicate the problem and the shifter and their mate get their HEA. This series, for me, is like crack. I can’t get enough of it – even though I know what will happen. Obviously if I’m on book 47 of this series (not to mention the spin-off series that are in the teens and 20s of books also), I really like them. This is one of my favorites for one simple reason. Jared. Jared is the mate of Carson, the chief enforcer for the pack. He is my favorite character in this whole series, and any book that has Jared featured prominently in it gets an extra star from me. If you are a fan of this series, I think you will love it. I particularly enjoy these books because they take me out of my day to day stress, they are easy to read without complicated plot devices, and there is always something sweet and funny in each book. They might not be to everyone’s taste, but I like a guaranteed happy ending that I can always count on. Enjoy!
