BLURB: No indiscriminate killing. No collateral damage. No unvetted targets.
These are the rules Hawes Madigan lives by. Rules that make being Fog City’s Prince of Killers bearable. Soon, he’ll be king—of an organization of assassins—and the crown has never felt heavier. Until the mysterious Dante Perry swaggers into his life.
Dante looks like a rock god and carries himself like one too, all loose-limbed and casually confident. He also carries a concealed weapon, a private investigator’s license, and a message for the prince. Someone inside Hawes’s organization is out to kill the future king.
In the chaos that follows the timely warning, Hawes comes to depend on Dante. On his skills as an investigator, on the steadiness he offers, and on their moments alone when Hawes lets Dante take control. As alliances are tested and traitors exposed, Hawes needs Dante at his back and in his bed. But if the PI ever learns Hawes’s darkest secret, Hawes is sure to get a knife to the heart—and a bullet to the brain—instead.
There’s no shortage of twists and turns in this new romantic suspense trilogy from Layla Reyne. Prince of Killers is book one of three. Fair warning: buckle up, cliffhangers ahead!
REVIEW:
This story doesn’t take long to pick up with the action as we quickly get to know Hawes Madigan and the details of his life. He is the leader of his family of vengeance seekers who has been trying to turn their organization into a slightly new direction after his grandfather took ill and he took over things. Unfortunately, Dante has come into the picture with a warning that someone has it out for Hawes, so clearly not everyone is happy about the changes Hawes and his family have been making.
Hawes is immediately attracted to Dante, but he is a bit leery and hesitant to trust him, someone who seemingly came out of nowhere with details about his life that most people don’t know. When Dante’s warning comes into play sooner than expected, it is Dante who helps Hawes out. He needles his way into Hawes’ and his family’s lives as they try to ferret out the traitor who clearly has inside information. Loyalties are tested and trust is gained, misplaced and then found again as they try to get to the bottom of things while keeping everyone safe at the same time. Hawes’ brother and sister and a few other loyal co-workers make for some interesting characters as well.
I really enjoy Ms. Raynes’ writing style. Her stories are generally a little more serious or believable (even if they are about unbelievable themes) with not a lot of fluff or cuteness overload, which I am thankful for time and again. Her guys are usually a little bad ass, yet they show emotions and find love just the same without losing those personality traits. There are lots of twists and turns to keep things interesting and plenty of action with just enough sexy times to feel right. I loved how Hawes struggled with everything on his shoulders and while he rarely put his own needs before those of his family, he starts to with Dante, and they just seem to click.
I was totally cheering things on at the end, but then there is a big cliffy and I about cried that I couldn’t jump right into the next book. I’m glad there will be two more books in this world and can’t wait to see how things play out in Fog City, how the family continues to pick up the pieces and maintain control, and most definitely want to know more about Dante and Hawes.
