When the cards are stacked against you, the Kings will even the odds.
For Ward “King” Kingston the role of protector, forged by fire and tragedy, is one he takes seriously. When King is asked to safeguard the son of a four-star general and friend, he is pulled back into the world of government black ops on a mission that raises painful memories from his past. The moment King meets Leo, amid the chaos of a lockdown at a secret black site, it’s clear he’s never faced a challenge like this – one that will test his unwavering sense of control.
Leopold de Loughrey is a misunderstood genius whose anxiety and insecurities are sent into overdrive when he is forcefully recruited to work on a top-secret project. Terrified of what his role as “invaluable asset” means, Leo’s stress leads to disappearances, arguments, and blowups that threaten the project and Leo’s future. King’s arrival is a calm in the storm for Leo and his frenetic thoughts.
King and Leo couldn’t be more different, yet as they navigate the dangers of a secret multi-agency operation and face unknown threats, their differences could be what saves them. Neither man believes a happily ever after is in the cards, but their hearts might just prove them wrong…if they can survive a deadly betrayal.
REVIEW:
If you’ve seen any of my reviews for THIRDS, you know that I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Charlie Cochet and when I heard that she was self-publishing a new series, I was ALL ABOUT IT!! These new characters drew me in and held their grip on me.
This story is the conclusion of the series of the Four Kings Security series. Ward “King” Kingston is our Alpha hero in this story. We’ve gotten to know King throughout the series and I couldn’t wait for his story. King is our main man and has been this entire series…Our leader and our protector. We truly get to see King in this role as protector to Leo. King has so much guilt from the last mission that his team went on and how they lost their most of their brothers and the High Value Protectee. You can still feel the pain that he’s under even as he falls for Leo. King has to battle his protective instincts while helping Leo get his job done.
Leo…I really liked this character. I liked how perfect he is for King. How Leo needs to have someone be protective of him as he’s quirky and just so darn adorkable. Leo is a brilliant hacker/computer tech and he’s gotten involved against his will in this project and it’s driving him crazy. Pulled into a Black Site and not given the tools that he needs to get the job done. Jealous co-workers and people not understanding of his needs and how he works.
I have to say that I liked that this story was a slow burn romance. I got to see these characters get to know each other and allow their feelings to grow. That once they became intimate, that their bond grew and it was really lovely to behold.
Having the rest of the Kings and their partners in the story really brought home the feelings of Family and Love and being there for each other. I always Love that about Charlie’s books. That your Family isn’t always blood, but who you choose as well.
I have to say that Charlie did what she always does…she brings you an AMAZING story that draws you in. I’ve been hooked on Charlie’s work for years now and it doesn’t seem to end (nor would I want it too). I’m really looking forward to the spin-off series as well.
Before you go…Greg Boudreaux really brought his A-Game for this book…hell the whole series. Greg has NEVER done a bad narration in my opinion, however, in this series/audiobooks…I feel like the characters that I LOVE have truly come to life. Job Very Well Done!!
