BLURB:
When a veterinarian and a construction worker connect, it takes mishaps, mistakes, and a Rhodesian Ridgeback named Rex to show them they’re made for each other.
Dr. Carter Falon is content living a quiet life in a small town caring for his animal patients. That doesn’t mean he’s not looking for a distraction. After finding himself precariously wedged… naked and at the mercy of a drop-dead gorgeous construction worker, Carter hires his savior to renovate his home.
When Tanner Grady’s best friend and new niece needed him, he uprooted and relocated without a second thought. His life has since been centered on work and spending time with his family, but when he comes to the rescue of a cute vet, Tanner finds he’s a lot more interested in the homeowner than the house he’s renovating.
REVIEW:
Carter inherits a house and decides to move to the small town. He loves his work as a vet and he’s made a good friend at the practice. The house is a bit of a disaster and he needs help fast to get it under control so that he can actually function there. Tanner is still rather new to town and he answers the call for help from Carter. When he comes to the house, he realizes this will be a huge job – the house had obviously been neglected for decades. After he rescues Carter from the clutches of the house, he determines that he is as interested in the owner as he is in the project which will keep him afloat for a while.
Tanner has agreed to begin the job part time while finishing up some other work after seeing that Carter really needs essentials – like bathroom and electrical work – done. As Tanner works on the house, Carter becomes more friendly with him, often inviting him to dinner after he finishes work for the day. As they get to know each other, the share more of their stories and eventually they both share that they are gay. With that out of the way, they work their way around to their attraction.
All is going well until there is a change at Carter’s practice and a new vet, nephew of the owner, is brought it. At first things seem to go ok, although there are little comments that seem meant only for Carter. Other scheduling changes are made however, and soon Carter is suspicious of the new guy. Then when an incident occurs at a bar in town while he is out with Tanner, things go from bad to worse. Tanner is protective if Carter and he’s definitely unhappy with the way things are going with Carter’s job.
After another series of changes, Carter begins to show the signs of stress from his job. When his parents come to visit and meet Tanner, they also pick up on the tension from the job. Nobody is happy about it, Carter least of all. A final twist in the story once again changes the dynamic in Carter’s workplace and in Tanner and Carter’s life together.
This is the first book I’ve read by this new to me author. Overall, I enjoyed this story. I really liked Carter. I found his parents to be a bit over the top, but they were cute nonetheless. Tanner and his BFF and daughter were a nice addition to the story and definitely showed Tanner’s softer side. I also liked Carter’s BFF at work, Lauren. The villain of the piece I found to be a too much of a caricature rather than a person – I would have appreciated something humanizing about him. For me, the pacing was a little slow and probably another round of edits would have tightened that up a bit. Also, I found the neatly tied up ending to be a little bit too unbelievable which dimmed my appreciation slightly. As usual, YMMV.
