What was your hardest scene to write in the Railers’ hockey romance series?
RJ: The hardest scene for me came in book 3 (Deep Edge, the figure skater and the hockey player). One of our heroes, had an addiction to painkillers. He started taking them to keep him upright and out on his beloved ice, but his age is against him, he’s losing everything all in one go, and the moment he admits this to someone else, it broke my heart. Also the first chapters in any new book is hard, because that chapter is setting the tone for the book.
VL: Oh boy this is a tough one. For me I’m going to say writing the scene when one of the Railers suffered a traumatic head injury was the hardest for me. Much of the inspiration for that storyline was based on a horrible head injury that my favorite player, Mats Zuccarello, suffered a few years ago. Having to watch the videos of that injury taking place and then reading over the horrible suffering and battle Mats had to go through to recover brought it all back.
How long does it take to write a co-authored hockey romance book, are some more difficult than others? How do you write together?
RJ: We take it in turns to write chapters in first person from our characters POV. However, after we write a chap and send it on, the other author reads, amends, etc, and then we sit and talk openly about character, motivation, structure, and all kinds of authory type things. We have a very honest writing relationship, and if one of us thinks something isn’t working, then we will say so. Very often a small tweak that the other person noticed will make a story flow better. Book 1, Changing Lines, took us only three weeks to write, and it was a passionate, fast fall, into the world of hockey. Remaining books take us around four weeks to write between us. I don’t think any of our writing has been difficult to do in terms of the writing part, but I know myself that I suffered badly with depression for about three months, so that affected my writing, and our partnership. Vicki was all supportive and gave me the space to get my head together. That is why we work.
VL: *hugs RJ* Our books really do seem to flow incredibly well and pretty darn quickly. Since we’re both MAJOR pantsers we don’t plot out a whole lot and that generally works well for us. We did have a bit of a snag in one of the Owatonna books where we had to sit back and ask “Where is this darn thing heading?” before we could go any further. After a bit of brainstorming we got things worked out and then it ran along like a well-oiled machine. So yeah, usually no longer than four weeks per book, sometimes it’s even less if we’re both in the groove.
